4 out of 5 stars Upgrade at the first chance!   August 2, 2010
Andy Sammonds
My family got this computer this computer from Best Buy after our old Sony computer died. The computer worked fine at first, but then, any application using 3D graphics would lag & frameskip for up to 6 minutes. It still goes on, but I'm asking for some upgrades for Christmas.

Pro's:

* Windows 7 beats Vista or Mac any day!
* Great for everyday use
* Easier to change desktop background than ever before
* Neat gadgets for desktop

Con's:

* Not for gaming without upgrades
* nVidia Geforce 9100 SUCKS! Get a 460 instead
* CPU isn't up to snuff as they say it is
* Interior gets dirty quick. Compressed air alone won't cut it!

Overall, just a home computer. I have read that people have upgraded it for optimum gaming.

5 out of 5 stars A Lot of PC at a Affordable Price!   April 13, 2010
John M. Keller (Arleta, Ca.)
I brought this as a Debranded PC through a competitor for $249 (It only came with the Keyboard, Mouse, AC Plug, and NO O/S) to be used to replace an old P4 Desktop that was getting to a point were it was starting to get to loud, wrong color and size for the intended entertainment center, and most importantly it was starting to become unreliable (There is a slight short that would turn it off for no reason). So I started looking and found this Model it was the right size, color, quiet, and most importantly cost effective. Since I did not need the monitor, speakers, or OS (Thank God For Technet)so I brought it and was one of my best decesions ever made.

Not only is it great what it was intended for (Being a Media PC) due the upgradable specs of the board I was also able to turn it into a secondary Virtual Server as well (Running VMWare Server 2.0.2).

Worked first time up with no issues.

I changed out the processor that came with it to a Athlon ll X4 (P) 635 2.9 GHz (95W) processor witch gave it a Windows 7 index rating of 7.3 (It gave it a 6.0 with the old processor, see my system spec below) I hate to admit but even through my Primary Home Server that runs Intel Quad Core 2.66GHZ with 6mb L3 cache and 2mb L2 cache is rated better I found that this processor actually performed slightly better than my other one. With the less power consumption and performance of this processor I can create many different virtuals and still run it as a Home Media PC with neither one conflicting and lower running cost that my Intel Quad Core Home Server.

Swapped out the memory from 2GB PC5300 to 8GB PC6400, That changed the Windows 7 Index rating from a 5.3 to a 7.3 (Can be upgraded to 16GB and yes the RAM is obtainable).

I put in a ATI PCI-E Video Card 512mb x1650 that I had laying around that brought the Windows 7 Index rating from a 3.5 to 4.6 (Since this is not being used for gaming this is more than acceptable).

You can not go wrong with this PC for the price, great on price and overhead for running it and it is actually doing a little more than what had been orginally intended for.

I read a few reviews about the incompatibility with itunes. I would just like to say that I've ran itunes and synced multiple devices with this computer and have not had any problems. When you DL Itunes, make sure to get the x64 bit version.
I recommend this computer wholeheartedly, its a great deal for the price.

4 out of 5 stars not so perfect if you want to play with Linux over VirtualBox   January 30, 2010

I bought this PC not because I worked for HP 21 years ago, but because it was a reasonable deal at Fry's 2 months ago ($479). It was not the absolutely lowest price (some got it at $450 from Staples), but acceptable. Amazon's price seems too high.

It seems to work fine with the typical Windows 7 applications such as Offices, IE, FireFox and so on. I can also run 2 of my most important (anti-virus) software, which does not seem to slow down the system. I am not a gamer as I am too old. I also do not edit films. So, this PC is fast enough for me. But I have been working on device drivers, boot loader bringup, and Linux kernel on other architectures. So, I think I know a little bit about system level issues.

The graphics is a little weak. But that is OK. It still works for production software. You get what you pay for. My friend told me 3D video will be ready soon. So, I may buy a 3D-ready graphic card in the future.

The main memory is more than enough for me now. Typically it uses 2 GB or less. There are 4 GB usually unused. It claims to support up to 16GB. But this assumes there will be 4 GB DDR2 memory. I have not checked stores to see if there is 4GB DDR2 available or not, as I have no need to add more memory soon. I used to have a slow PC with 512MB and it constantly thrashes. That is why I bought this PC.

The bottle neck is apparently my DSL line at home, which is only 6 mbps downstream. I worked on ISDN BRI and DSL device drivers before. If you need to get some data through your DSL, your PC will have to wait, no matter how cheap the PC is (assuming there is enough memory).

Typically, the CPU is less than 50% busy. Sometimes, it is even less than 10% busy. I can tell my money is not at work. So, I installed Sun's VirtualBox on this PC to see if I can keep the CPU busy and use more memory. Then I installed OpenSolaris, PC-BSD, ubuntu, Fedora and so on on top of the VirtualBox. The problem with ubuntu over VirtualBox over Windows 7 are:

1. When I try to update the software, it seems to receive very few packets, then stop. It can not receive all the requires (100+) packages in one shot. I tried similar configuration in my office (with a different Intel-based PC running Windows XP) and the problem does not happen.

2. When I tried to run 'compiz' (a cool window manage on Linux), it somehow does not work.

Overall, I think it is a good PC. It is not super fast as there is no layer 3 cache. But it is fast enough and I do not have to keep waiting and curse the old PC as before. I expect to use it for several years.

4 out of 5 stars USB Crash Problem Appears Resolved   January 28, 2010

Several reviewers here and elsewhere have rated this computer low because of blue screen crashes when transferring large files to an external USB drive. That problem appears to have been resolved with a Windows Update installed automatically (if your computer is set up to automatically install updates) on January 28, 2010. If you did not get that update, you can download the fix [...].

I own this computer. With that fix in place, it is good piece of hardware - particularly for the price.
