Product Description At 10.2 ounces, Kindle is lighter than a typical paperback and as thin as most magazines. Barely a third of an inch in profile, you'll find Kindle fits perfectly in your hands. Kindle is as easy to hold and use as a book. We designed it with long-form reading in mind. When reading for long periods of time, people naturally shift positions and often like to read with one hand. Kindle's page-turning buttons are located on both sides, allowing you to read and turn pages comfortably with one hand from any position. The page-turn buttons now flex inward to prevent any accidental page turns when picking up or handling Kindle. Kindle has a new easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. Kindle is completely wireless and ready to use right out of the box--no setup, no cables, no computer required. With Kindle's 25% longer battery life, you can read on a single charge for up to 4 days with wireless on. Turn wireless off and read for up to 2 weeks. Battery life will vary based on wireless usage, such as shopping the Kindle Store and downloading content. In low coverage areas or in 1xRTT only coverage, wireless usage will consume battery power more quickly. Whispernet utilizes Amazon's optimized technology plus Sprint's national high-speed (3G) data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. And unlike WiFi, you never have to hunt for a hotspot.

Great product for most users.... November 23, 2009 Julie Busch (AZ, USA) The Kindel 2 was purchased as a gift for my sister who has decreasing eyesight and can no longer read normal books. It was thought that with the ability to increase font size that she would be able to view the print. But not so. Since the "e-ink" is unable to change from normal to bold print, or have any way of changing the contrast on the screen, she is unable to see the print. And although there are audio books out there, not everyone enjoys being "read" a book to.
It is a very handy devise and the free wireless ability is great! It seems very easy to use, but does have a slight delay after each function selected - no big whoop.
But for those that are interested in getting this as a last resort to be able to read books easier, you may want to do some more research. For the future, I would ask the makers to add a way to change the contrast of the screen (regardless if you can see it in daylight), add a backlight function (so you don't need a reading lamp at night, or have to travel with the clip on light), and have abilities to change the text to a bold.
I am sad this did not work for her, but for those that don't have any visual imparities - it is a really neat product.
Disappointing November 23, 2009 Fabio Bueno Reis Jr. (Brasilia, DF Brazil) Just three days after the registration of my new Kindle the wireless connection stopped to work. It was one month ago and I continue to try to get some solution with the Amazon but seems that they don't know what to do. Since the possibility to have instantaneous access to the Amazon content via wireless connectivity is for me the most interesting characteristic of the Kindle, I can't review it positively.
Great Hardware, Lacking content November 23, 2009 Joe Dohn The kindle hardware is excellent. The screen is easy on the eyes. My problem is that now that I have it and I go to get a book I want, I come to realize that the title is not available for the kindle. It happens frequently. Amazon is good about having new titles for the kindle, but older books might not be available. Check before you buy. Also I have purchased a few books now and most of them have been poorly formatted. They are missing a table of contents, chapter titles are inline with the text. I suppose that that issue is one with the publisher and not amazon, but the shoddy formatting can take me out of my reading.
Very Good- but 2 suggestions November 23, 2009 Rosie Neyhouse (Boone, NC USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love my new Kindle 2. Among the many benefits are: It allows me to transport a book easily in my purse, lots of free books, fast downloading, with a simple document stand (from my computer) I can easily read while eating. However, I would like to suggest a couple of items that I think would easily change this from 4 stars to 5 starts - in the "Kindle 3". One, menu chooses could be numbered, so that users could type the number of the item in the menu and press return. Two, around the edge of the unit place a textured area so that the unit is less likely to slip from your hands. The case is very slippery. The textured area may work on the back of the unit's edge. (I really like the look of the front.)
THanks for listening to my ramblings.
needs some work still November 23, 2009 Jens Full (London UK) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Got this thing 4 days ago as it wasn't available in the UK before that. The idea and the usability are good. Downloading books from Amazon is easy and the user interface is alright. Readability is great but:
The device is a bit too big to fit into any pocket so will have to carry a bag if I take it anywhere. Given the small size of the screen it should really be a bit smaller. The keyboard is very erratic and has quite a bit of unpredictable delay before doing anything.
The content is much more expensive when bought from the UK with titles that sell for 99 cents to Americans going for more than 3 Dollars.
If you want to subscribe to newspapers they don't deliver any of the pictures to the UK which really defeats the purpose.
As long as Amazon thinks it can use Europeans as second class cash cows I will have to wait for someone else to get it right before buying more contents. Luckily there is a lot of free contents around with special mention to manybooks...
