Product Description

My name is Ree.

Some folks know me as The Pioneer Woman.

After years of living in Los Angeles, I made a pit stop in my hometown in Oklahoma on the way to a new, exciting life in Chicago. It was during my stay at home that I met Marlboro Man, a mysterious cowboy with steely blue eyes and a muscular, work-honed body. A strict vegetarian, I fell hard and fast, and before I knew it we were married and living on his ranch in the middle of nowhere, taking care of animals, and managing a brood of four young children. I had no idea how I'd wound up there, but I knew it was exactly where I belonged.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks is a homespun collection of photography, rural stories, and scrumptious recipes that have defined my experience in the country. I share many of the delicious cowboy-tested recipes I've learned to make during my years as an accidental ranch wife—including Rib-Eye Steak with Whiskey Cream Sauce, Lasagna, Fried Chicken, Patsy's Blackberry Cobbler, and Cinnamon Rolls—not to mention several "cowgirl-friendly" dishes, such as Sherried Tomato Soup, Olive Cheese Bread, and CrÈme BrÛlÉe. I show my recipes in full color, step-by-step detail, so it's as easy as pie to follow along.

You'll also find colorful images of rural life: cows, horses, country kids, and plenty of chaps-wearing cowboys.

I hope you get a kick out of this book of mine. I hope it makes you smile. I hope the recipes bring you recognition, accolades, and marriage proposals. And I hope it encourages even the most harried urban cook to slow down, relish the joys of family, nature, and great food, and enjoy life.

2 out of 5 stars Too Basic   November 21, 2009

The book is lovely. Her stories are funny. The pictures are gorgeous. The recipes are boring.

All of the recipes are so simple and basic. Would be good for someone just learning to cook. None of them are really special or unique. I returned the book. Way to simple. I could cook almost all of her recipes without instructions.

As a follower of The Pioneer Woman, I was anxious to receive this book. It is wonderful and makes the reader feel capable of anything!

5 out of 5 stars 5/5!!   November 21, 2009

Well. Where to begin? My mom and I LOVE this cookbook. We love it so much that it has a special spot on our bookcase instead of down with the normal cookbooks. That is HARDCORE, people!! The pictures are downright amazing, and we have both sat and just read the book to look at the pictures and read the stories sprinkled throughout.
(On a side note: the ribeyes with the whiskey cream sauce are so amazing that we invited a young man over just to see his reaction. He ate two HUGE steaks, for the record. And we're making that recipe for Thanksgiving too--we're forsaking the traditional turkey!!)
We have yet to make our way through the whole book recipe-wise (that'd take a while), but on a last note: the cinnamon rolls are to DIE FOR. This recipe should come with a surgeon general's warning for addictive behavior on the part of the lucky people who eat them.
We wish that we had known how addicting this book was before we bought it, but having followed Ree Drummond's blog for a few months beforehand I should have had an inkling. Suffice to say, it's a fabulous book and we're buying several more for friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cookbook!!!   November 20, 2009

I want to start by saying that I love Ree's blog! After reading it for awhile, I decided I wanted a copy of her cookbook. Then I came to Amazon and read some of the reviews and almost did not order it. After all, I wanted a cookbook with lots of recipes and some reviewers were saying it contained too many pictures and stories and not enough recipes. I went ahead and ordered it anyway because I like pictures and stories and Ree's are some of the best. I am so glad I did!!! It is the most beautiful cookbook I have ever seen. The photos are so bright and colorful. I sat down yesterday after receiving it and thumbed through it, reading stories and looking at pictures. Then I got down to business and found a recipe and made it for supper. My family loved it! I really like that there are step by step photos. It helped at one point when I wasn't sure what my recipe was supposed to look like. Later I went to the first recipe and started reading. The photos made each recipe look so appealing! For instance, the roasted corn salad looked so good that I wanted to try it right then, and I don't like corn! Then my husband picked up the book and looked through it and he said the same thing, "This makes me hungry."

So, if you like photos, stories, or really good food, you should definitely get this cookbook.

What a delight! Even my husband has told people about this cookbook. Haven't had time to try any of the receipes yet, if only one receipe is good out of this book, it was worth the price. Hope another cookbook is in her future.
