Product Description

On the run . . .

Elena Gilbert's love, the vampire Stefan Salvatore, has been captured and imprisoned by demonic spirits who are wreaking havoc in Fell's Church. While her friends Bonnie and Meredith explore the evil that has taken over their town, Elena goes in search of Stefan.

In order to find him, she entrusts her life to Stefan's brother, Damon Salvatore, the handsome but deadly vampire who wants Elena, body and soul. Along with her childhood friend Matt, they set out for the slums of the Dark Dimension, where Stefan is being held captive. It is rumored to be a world where vampires and demons roam free, but humans must live enslaved to their supernatural masters. . . .

Elena will stop at nothing to free Stefan. Yet with each passing day the tension between Elena and Damon grows, and she is faced with a terrible decision: Which brother does she really want?

Back in Fell's Church, Bonnie and Meredith have made some dire discoveries. They hastily try to follow Elena and warn her—only to be caught up in Elena's most dangerous adventure yet.

2 out of 5 stars Bad   March 20, 2010

this book was pretty bad. half the time its hard to even figure out whats going on, or whos talking at that moment. the story was completely pointless. i thought that maybe by half way through the book, they would be done with their little rescue mission, and be on to saving the world, but the whole book was this rediculous rescue mission. it was just very drawn out, and not alot going on. probably about 10% of this book was anything of importance. i dont even know what to say about elenas character. just bad...

L J Smith has done it again! Another fantastic book.
This book is so amazing. It's mostly in elena's point of view.(sometimes Damon, sometimes Bonnie)
My heart is racing like crazing just trying to figuer out what's around the next page. Not even to mention whos Elena going to end up with.
There is plenty of romance and action in this novel. Enough to satifie the young reader... I would recomend this novel to people who have read all the other vampire diaries first. Lj smith is an amazing writer. I hope to see more of her work!

Thanks for reading!

4 out of 5 stars It's the Damon Diaries   March 19, 2010

The book just prior to this one, Nightfall, had gone so far off track that I'd been quite worried for the series. I decided to keep reading because right at the very end of that book, we'd gotten hints of what would happen next. Aha! Is there hope that it will get back on track?

Yes. And no. With this book, it did and it didn't. Some of what was so odd in the previous book is back. The wings -- they're still here. I guess once they were introduced it was too much to hope that some of the really more out there things would just be forgotten. There would be good reasons to forget some things or leave some things out. You see, it seemed like L.J. Smith perhaps crammed too many story lines in and yet why? Some seem to never go anywhere. I know, I know -- teasers for the next book perhaps? Sure. But again why? The book ended with one main event that could be the whole theme for the next book. Instead there are several story lines from this book leftover, barely touched, yet clearly major plots. They really did nothing for this book. I was halfway through the book before one such storyline from near the start of the book was even touched upon again and then I was near the end of the book before it was mentioned again. And still -- nowhere near any resolution or real drama or, well, anything to really get me interested in that story even though as I said it's supposed to be, a major one. I'm at the point where if it's never mentioned again I'd probably not care. The next book could start with that character just dying off and I'd shrug. Nothing was done to make me care. Not good when dealing with major reoccurring characters and something that should be rather dramatic. There were minor characters I cared for more than some major ones just because they were actually given more character / page time even though I find myself asking why.

Ah, but the saving grace -- Damon. It's really his book now, even if it was supposed to be Elena's originally. And then Stefan's and then Damon's. It's all Damon holding this series together now. The way he likes being a vampire and toying with people but in the end not really being cruel - that is just too fun. And maybe even Elena, she might still be helping this series too. I found myself asking "Okay Elena make up your mind -- Are you a good person or a horrible egotistical wench?" Those two things keep me interested -- watching Damn struggle with who he is and watching me struggling with trying to figure out who in the heck Elena is. Do I like her or wish they'd all run far far away from her?

Everyone and everything else is so all over the place that it could be there or not. I do like when larger groups of the characters get together. Those dynamics are fun. But somehow every time it seems like that's just about to really go somewhere, it's rushed through and then back to Elena or Elena/Damon or Elena/Stefan.

I thought that the original books were 5 stars. Nightfall was 3, though I was being generous and giving extra credit to the good parts and not dinging the bad parts as much as I should have. This? I'm torn. I have to rate it higher than Nightfall. If only there were 1/2 stars. I'm not sure if I should downgrade Nightfall to 2, so I can give this 3 -- or just cave and give this 4. I think I'll give this the benefit of the doubt and go for 4. But ONLY because Damon saved it some.

I will read the next book. It's time for L.J. Smith to focus on her other books and just let the guys with the tv show take this baby over. I'm looking forward to her Night World book more than I am the next Vampire Diaries, sadly. I want this next Vampire Diaries book only to see how it ends. It really is time for it to end. Or for Damon to just get his own series and stop pretending this is a series where the others matter, they obviously are after thoughts or word count fillers at this point.

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING AND ANYONE WHO SAYS ANYTHING AGAINST IT IS CRAZY!!! BOOKS AWESOME IF YOU READ THE OTHER VAMPIRE DAIRIES THIS WONT DISAPPOINT YOU!! THE WRITING IS SO GREAT IT HAS YOU HANGING OF THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT WANTING TO READ MORE AFTER EVERY CHAPTER! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE ENDING AND CAN NOT WAIT TILL THE NEXT BOOK COMES OUT! 2 out of 5 stars What a waste of time..   March 19, 2010

The reason I have continued to read these books is because I have enjoyed the interaction between all of the characters, Bonnie, Meredith, Matt, etc. This book focuses a ridiculous amount of time on basically just Damon and Elena, literally hundreds of pages. I find Elena's character to be annoying in this book. She jumps head first into things without thinking and lacks will power with Damon. The plot was all over and confusing. I can't believe this is the book I've been waiting for. What an absolute disappointment.
