Awesome book! November 8, 2009 Lindsay A. Palmer Loved the way the Sections/Chapters were broken down.. definitely had major topics for Maternal nursing.. easy ready!
Tedious authors went for book padding instead of word economy April 5, 2009 Laura Perez (NYC) When I saw this book for the first time, I thought to myself: "What can they possibly have to say that requires so many pages?" If this fell on my foot I would break a toe and if it fell on my cat it would kill him.
This is the required text for this semester (6 weeks Maternity & 6 weeks Pediatrics). When I saw the price I was outraged, but bought it for a considerably cheaper price via Amazon. (Thank God for that) The school bookstore and that major online bookstore charge way too much.
I'm impressed when authors can provide needed information in a format that follows Word Economy. So far I am 5 weeks into this semester and I haven't found a use for this monstrosity yet other than to copy/paste data analysis for my care plans. I thought I hated my Med/Surg book which consisted of two massive volumes, but at least they broke down the specific information in a somewhat more concise and easier to access manner: Etiology, NDx, nursing interventions and follow up, while not reaching toward excessive repetition, high verbosity and tremendous tediousness) I found myself flipping through the pages of this book and quickly lost my patience.
So what I have done this semester is rely on "Saunder's Comprehensive Review" and "Reviews & Rationales Comprehensive Review for NCLEX" to condense the needed information for me, and just gone along with the Powerpoints and information gathered in lecture and then from all that I made my own notes to study from. I don't have time to find buried information in a book 1900+ pages. So far it has worked out well and I'm just happy I passed my first two exams with great marks, higher than the class average. I know my classmates are equally as frustrated as I am, but I have no idea what they are doing to study with that book. Now, there is a market for everyone and some people will very much like the same concepts drilled into them at every turn of the page. This is the book for that. As for this future nurse, I can't wait to sell this thing and get some of my money back.
As for the whole transaction via Amazon. I couldn't be happier. It was smooth and simple, the book arrived quickly, excellently packaged and in great condition. I will definitely purchase from Amazon again.
This is the biggest book yet January 29, 2009 J. Foster (Moline, IL) The new information in this book is spread out. I think they could have taken the 350 or so pages I recently read and condensed the info into about 50 unrepetative pages. Also, this book is HUGE!!!! Can't tell ya enough about how large and awkward it is.
Positively, the infant assessment section includes some really cool pictures which are helpful.
Verbose and Redundant November 19, 2008 Coffee Klatch Reviews (Stockton, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the required text for the current rotation in my nursing program. I don't know that there are better books out there, but I wish this one wasn't so verbose and redundant. It is a book that is used for only one rotation (half pediatrics, half maternity), but it is as large as the main text we use for the entire rest of the program (as if the large size makes the authors think they really know their stuff).
It feels like at the end of every disease in the "Nursing Management" section is the same information repeated again and again and again: Provide support for the parents, monitor vital signs, meet the child's nutritional needs, etc. with pages and pages spent on this. Books like this should condense their information, as in "most children need x, y, and z" and have that information in a single place. Then it would only be necessary to mention the differences in care that a particular disease has from the main pattern. This would make learning and memorizing easier, drastically reduce the size of the text, and make us pay attention because we know that what's written is only mentioned in one place.
The information is so verbose and redundant that it doesn't seem worth reading for the one different detail buried somewhere in the sea of similar information. I am really considering just reading online continuing education modules or the Merck Manual or the ATI guides that we got for our program.
This book just doesn't seem worth the time necessary to get through its verbosity.
Excellent all around!! September 28, 2007 Stephanie Cestare 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Shipping time was very quick. Book was in excellent condition, just as described and had all of the required materials with it (CD, etc.). Just as good as the school book store, but at a cheaper price!!
