Very helpful February 11, 2010 A. Williamson This book gives a lot of helpful advice for dealing with a difficult parent. It helps put some of the struggles in perspective and gives practical tips on how to respond in a positive and effective manner to challenging situations.
It's like my own Mother was interviewed for the book! October 23, 2009 Karen Vasser (Los Altos, Ca USA) My brother sent me the link for this book on Amazon, we could not believe the outline - that was our 89 year old Mother who has been stressing all of us out! It was very comforting to know we are not alone, and the suggestions in the book helped to support what we were doing and try to not feel as guilty. After all, with the difficult older parent, it is all about guilt - and them! I suppose it's rather mean to be comforted in the fact that other people have as difficult a parent as we do, we thought our Mom was unique. The strength in numbers, and having an actual book to validate the steps we are taking to care for her, and our feelings. I think it will be a Christmas present for my three brothers.
Coping with your difficult parent August 12, 2009 Mrs. Nora R. Cassidy (Toledo, Ohio) Great book! Helps you see things from your parents' perspective and understand what they are going through. Highly recommend to any one dealing with a difficult parent.
Helpful strategies for dealing with challenging mother or father behaviors March 16, 2009 Jamieson Haverkampf (Atlanta, GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Coping with Your Difficult Older Parent, written by the cofounders of Aging Network Services of Bethesda, Maryland, explores strategies for challenging mother or father behaviors. The book shows specific dialogues on how to handle difficult communication, such as telling your parent he or she cannot move in with you or how to deal with a parent who makes consistent unreasonable demands on your time.

Informative but... November 17, 2008 J. Davy (Maryland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
...dry. Lots of useful information, but I prefer Elder Rage by Jacqueline Marcell for an informative book that is very readable. I found myself skipping chapters in Coping that I felt were not relevent and skimming topics that seemed to fit. Lots of clinical examples and dialogs. I highlighted a lot of this book and passed it along to my brothers so they could better care for our mom. Useful, but not a page turner.
