Amazon.com Review What causes chronic, debilitating back pain, one of the most common--and expensive to treat--ailments in the world? According to Robin McKenzie, a New Zealand physiotherapist for over 40 years and author of the wildly popular self-help manuals Treat Your Own Back and Treat Your Own Neck, distortion of the spinal disks--either from bad posture or injury--is the cause of the pain. The magic cure is the McKenzie Method--seven very specific exercises that allow the spine to return to its natural position. But forget the doctors--McKenzie asserts that the management of your back pain is your responsibility. Practice his seven unique exercises (the book includes seven each for the back and neck) consistently and at regular intervals and just about anyone can cure his or her own back or neck pain without the help of professionals. McKenzie believes self-treatment is actually more successful than medical interventions like surgery, chiropractic, or physical therapy, and indeed, recent research does show self-treatment to be a highly effective method. More richly detailed and in-depth than his previous books, this volume is illustrated with over 100 photos and liberally peppered with real-life case histories. Starting with an analysis of how the back and neck work, it moves on to a discussion of the common causes of pain--bad posture is most often to blame. At the core is a detailed explanation of how to do the McKenzie Method exercises, when to apply them, and how to adjust your personal program over time. Included are instructions for people who suffer with acute back and neck pain (with appropriate cautions regarding when to call a medical professional) as well as for people in special situations like pregnant women, athletes, and seniors. An impassioned introduction by coauthor Craig Kubey, a satisfied convert after suffering intense back and neck pain as a result of several auto accidents, could very well make a believer out of anyone. --Marianne Painter

7 Steps to a Pain-Free Life November 17, 2009 G. Richardson (Marana, Arizona) Great book....over the last few weeks I have greatly reduced the amount of advil I take for my back pain. I expect even better results
in the future.
Excellent November 13, 2009 D. Cressy (Florida and Panama) We have this book which we keep as a reference book when needed. My husband needed PT in a foreign country and they had excerpts of this book and were using it. They begged my husband to bring his book in but we didn't have it with us so we thought we would buy them their very own copy.
This book saved my life... October 15, 2009 C. Parks (Freeport, Texas) I had been suffering from back pain for some time (years really). Doctors had wanted to do surgery, and I was taking ibuprofen enough to worry about my liver. I tried physical therapy, and while that was nice and maybe helpful, it did not remove the pain. One weekend I had a particularly bad spasm of pain - sciatica of a wicked sort - and had gotten this book upon recommendation from a friend. With hours of the first exercise I could tell a difference. Within 2 days I was back to "normal". With regular use of the stretching exercises, I was feeling NO PAIN in less than a week. I regularly practice the exercises now (though not as often), watch my posture, and I haven't had ANY issues for over a year.
This book was a God-send, and I recommend it highly.
7 steps to a pain-free life September 26, 2009 Mary Surprenant (Hillsboro NH) Excellent reference guide for back problems! My back doctor recommended it to me. I got the book quickly and its in excellent condition! Thank You Amazon!
McKenzie exercises help September 12, 2009 middle aged bald guy (boston,ma) My physical therapist was familiar with the Mc Kenzie techniques. Actually, many p.t. sessions are identical to the exercises in the book. I'm using the neck exercise part of the book for my condition. A friend with a bad back had his doctor recommed the book for his back issues and it's helpging him as well.
