Product Description Have you ever wondered what’s happening in your brain as you go through a typical day and night? This fascinating book presents an hour-by-hour round-the-clock journal of your brain’s activities. Drawing on the treasure trove of information from Scientific American and Scientific American Mind magazines as well as original material written specifically for this book, Judith Horstman weaves together a compelling description of your brain at work and at play. The Scientific American Day in the Life of Your Brain reveals what’s going on in there while you sleep and dream, how your brain makes memories and forms addictions and why we sometimes make bad decisions. The book also offers intriguing information about your emotional brain, and what’s happening when you’re feeling love, lust, fear and anxiety—and how sex, drugs and rock and roll tickle the same spots. Based on the latest scientific information, the book explores your brain’s remarkable ability to change, how your brain can make new neurons even into old age and why multitasking may be bad for you. Your brain is uniquely yours – but research is showing many of its day-to-day cycles are universal. This book gives you a look inside your brain and some insights into why you may feel and act as you do. The Scientific American Day in the Life of Your Brain is written in the entertaining, informative and easy-to-understand style that fans of Scientific American and Scientific American Mind magazine have come to expect.

A Fascinating Read! February 16, 2010 Cindy Bailey (San Francisco Bay Area) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a fascinating, entertaining read! You'll learn how emotion, memory and consciousness function; how you make decisions; the role the brain plays in addiction; how chronic stress kills brain cells; and a myriad of other amazing details that impact our day-to-day lives. The science behind it all is here--rendering us a deeper understanding of how we function and behave--yet it's written in a language that's infinitely approachable, alive and clever (here's a sub-title: Why His Brain May Not Ask Directions). Horstman accomplishes something really tough to do in this book: she packs in loads of (scientific and health) information while at the same time keeping it all so readable--not to mention captivating! I highly recommend this book!
Best Book To Read For Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Development December 29, 2009 Uem Group Berhad, Jalil (Malaysia) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I conduct a three-day program on Emotional Intelligence for the Asian Region. I have been accredited by Hay Group to conduct the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI) Program. In the program when you talk about Knowing your Self, it has alot to do with the Brain and Neuroscience. This book gives very clear information and facts on the functions, hormones and how it affects our thinking, decision making and many more. Business Leaders need to read this book, so that they know when to do what and why things happen.
It is such a easy book to understand and it has helped me to understand better about behaviour. You can use this book to even improve your Relationship Management. I was the Head of the a reputable Leadership Centre and wished I had this book earlier. I must congratulate Ms Judith Horstman in getting this book published and strongly recommend it be used as a reference text for Leadership Development (if you really know what Leadership is about). It is books like this that make people like us lead a better life and become better leaders and followers. Thank you.
Less than BIO 100... December 16, 2009 Technical Books (Virginia Beach, VA United States) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is probably not a good read for anyone who's taken frosh psych or bio. It's not a science book, but a popularization with surprisingly little content. The apparent connection to Scientific American is misleading: In the editorial reviews you find this sentence: "Drawing on neurology articles from Scientific American and Scientific American Mind, science journalist Horstman creates..." In summary, this is mostly a superficial review of a few Scientific American articles.
The Scientific American Day in the Life of Your Brain November 24, 2009 Paul R. Nevergold (Buffalo, New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Judith Horstman's book Day in the Life of Your Brain is front and center in my collection of books on the "isness" of things - Why is things as they is? The author, an award winning journalist, understands the tentative nature of science, which is very important to us science folk. In addition, she writes with a charm that commonly brought a smile to my lips which is also important.
The very first chapter answered a question I had been pondering for almost 50 years. While in college, I was living with my gravely ill grandmother. I was both amazed and puzzled that I would perceive her distress while in a sound sleep, become instantly awake and functioning to assist her. It turns out our brain "has an app for that". It is called the RAS and is part of the more primitive area of our brain and originally evolved to detect the sound of a leopard's claws on the trunk of the tree where our ancestors fled for night safety. Mothers of newborns are familiar with this capability. I highly recommend this book to all who are even remotely interested in how their brain works. I also found it an easy yet substantive read. (A neat trick.)
A fine pick for all kinds of libraries, from schools at the high school level on up to general lending collections November 16, 2009 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Scientific American Day in the Life of Your Brain offers a 24-hour journal of what's happening in the brain as a human eats, sleeps, wakes up, fights, worries and more. It combines the latest cutting-edge research with new imaging techniques to provide a visual and verbal coverage of a range of mental considerations and is a fine pick for all kinds of libraries, from schools at the high school level on up to general lending collections.
