Easy and delicious way to long and healthy life March 15, 2010 Health Reader (Illinois, USA) LWB is a great read. You learn how the body works and a delicious way to feed it to stay healthy and live longer. It's easy and simple and an eye opener. It's one of my health bibles now. I had to give it some time because I used to low carb many years ago until brainwashed by the low fat media. Then I was a low fat eater, eating lots of carbs and gaining weight and losing health in the process. But now it is as if my body thanks me every time I eat. For some, great results happen quickly. But for others, it may take many months for the body to adjust. It's as if it's unbelieving that you are giving it what it needs. You may not see results as quickly as you would like and that is explained why in the book. But note that your insides are healing even if you don't see it on the outside at first. I think this is how nature intended us to nourish our bodies. Once you get over your bad carb shopping and cooking habits, it's easy and simple. One more note, it's difficult to find good, rich butter. I suggest shopping at a health food store or buying it online. Same with eggs and meat if possible.
this book saved my life (not hyperbole) February 20, 2010 bookloverFLA (south of Sarasota FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
These two authors deserve the Nobel Prize for bringing this science to the attention of the public and me specifically. I have had ulcerative colitis (UC) for almost 10 years with no remission and condition getting worse over the years. Conventional medicine says there is no cure and treats ONLY with prescription drugs.
I have been a good patient for that whole time, taking what was prescribed, with never any improvement, just deterioration.
Thankfully through an online support group I heard about this book. I had already begun some diet modification using SCD diet principles but it was not quite enough of a modification for me. Removing all carbohydrates from my diet was extremely difficult, in fact the authors of this book recommend eating more than I do currently, but after 6 weeks and incredible improvement I can say without question that carbohydrates are the root of my illness.
I have often wondered why my grandparents, country people, could eat eggs, butter, bacon, ham etc and live long lives. Their son, my father just died, after many years of ill health at an earlier age.
This country is in deep trouble with rampant obesity, diabetes and multitudes of ailments. If only this information was made standard knowledge we could solve our health care crisis. These are real doctors with real scientific background for their principles. Why has none of my doctors ever told me to at least try this diet?
Perhaps it is better for them that I remain their patient year after year. It certainly suits the pharmaceutical companies, my Rx costs a LOT.
I have never been so positive about a book and how it can improve a person's life without drugs. Buy this book. It's not easy for a non-scientist (like me) to read but I got the basic idea. Cut out carbohydrates and get healthier.

I have a bachelors degree in Biochemistry and plan to head on to medical school next year. I was looking forward to this book because I heard it was a fairly technical explanation of the science behind low carb. What I found was a heavy dose of case reports, extremely dated studies, and simplified conjecture. If your not scientifically literate, this book will impress you, otherwise I would read Good Calories Bad Calories instead, and just walk away with Lutz' basic lesson from clinical practice that a ketotic diet is unnecessary, but lower carb is good.

The book was in excellent condition, and arrived in a timely manner. I have not finished reading it yet as it is very thought provoking......and I have been plagued by migraines from something in my diet or medications that I have not yet narrowed down.
A cogent and responsible book on diet March 20, 2009 J. Seidman (Illinois, USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I've had Crohn's disease for 16 years, and as a result I've read many books on diet and nutrition. Life Without Bread is by far the best of them.
Dr. Lutz has tremendous experience in his own medical practice, where he's seen thousands of patients. As he and Dr. Allan go through the wide variety of ailments that a low-carb diet can treat, the discussions are based on experience rather than hypothesis. In a refreshing change from most books, the authors acknowledge that there will be cases that don't respond to a low-carb diet, and they explain why.
Many popular diet books that recommend extreme changes mention "healing crises": cases where people feel very sick after going on the diet. Most books just say that this is a sign that the diet is working, and to stick with it. This book is much more responsible in listing potential symptoms that might develop during a low-carb transition, as well as how to mitigate them. For people with existing health conditions, the authors recommend a gradual transition into the diet to minimize suffering.
Also, unlike so many book authors, Lutz and Allan aren't trying to sell anything beyond the book itself. They don't have a branded line of supplements, packaged foods, or ingredients. Everything they suggest eating is available at any grocery store.
Much of the material in the book is adapted from Lutz's much more scholarly work, "Dismantling a Myth: The Role of Fat and Carbohydrates in Our Diet," which was targeted for the medical community. As a result, this book is somewhat more technical reading than many popular diet books. However, the effort is well worth it, as the book provides unique insight into the plague of obesity and chronic illness that plagues modern America.
