Product Description As a twenty-three-year-old veterinarian, William W. Putney joined the Marine Corps at the height of World War II. He commanded the Third Dog Platoon during the battle for Guam and later served as chief veterinarian and commanding officer of the War Dog Training School, where he helped train former pets for war in the Pacific. After the war, he fought successfully to have USMC war dogs returned to their civilian owners. Always Faithful is Putneys celebration of the four-legged soldiers that he both commanded and followed. It is a tale of immense courage, as well as incredible sacrifice. For anyone who has ever read Old Yeller or the books of Jack London, here is a real-life story that rivals any fiction. At once a wistful tribute and a stirring adventure, Always Faithful will enthrall readers with one of the great animal stories of all time.

We will always thank you, Dr. Putney August 31, 2009 Lois A. Semple What a book. For the Doberman lover, this is a must read. The tribute to these dogs should be deemed a classic.
Excellent book... July 11, 2009 Almost 50 Lassie fan (IN) I've owned a German Shepherd ex-police dog, so I had read of their involvement in Vietnam (and it still makes me beyond livid that they met the fate they did at the end of THAT mess!); I had NOT known of the involvement of the Dobermans in WW II. Friends of mine had a Doberman, and I grew to love the breed through him. While I hate the use of dogs in war (I also hate the use of humans in them!), I greatly enjoyed many of the stories about these dogs and the success the Marines had with Dobermans in the Pacific. I shared some of the stories, such as the Chicago Doberman which was so aggressive, till spoken to in Greek by one of the men.....or should I say sung to in Greek. My Doberman-owning friends also loved the military use for condoms--wished they'd known it earlier to use on THEIR Doberman. Not an easy book to read if you hate dogs used in war, but if one feels that strongly, don't buy it. I greatly appreciated someone, an expert who worked with and for them, sharing their knowledge and memories with those of us who know just how special Dobermans truly are!
Eye Opening, Heartfelt, Courageous October 1, 2008 Twaddle45 (Los Angeles) This is a really good book. I think it would be even more appreicated by former Marines of this era. They could understand the military jargon and terminolgy a lot better then a lay person could like me. Still, a very good and informative book.
Worth it September 13, 2008 J. Goodlet (Toronto, Canada) Though I had the impression there would be more "action" out of the dogs remembered in this writing, it was still an interesting read for anyone that respects and admires what dogs can do for humans in the line of service. Certainly no regrets with the purchase.
Wonderful book about dogs February 3, 2008 Abby Raffles (NJ United States) This is a wonderful book about dogs. I never knew much about war dogs. I bought this book after reading Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs. There is a great, funny, heartwarming story in that book about a German Shepherd who was fighting on the Iraqi side. Then an Army sergeant got him and he started fighting for the Americans. It's hilarious, at first he was biting AMericans, then he started protecting them with his life until the Iraqis were trying to kill him. After a lot of work, he was finally brought back to the US and now lives as a pet. That's a great story, similar to some of these stories. I recommend both books.
