Product Description
Lameness, one of the most common and most troublesome of all equine ailments, remains the primary reason why horses are unable to fulfill their potential and their riders' and trainers' expectations. More preparation time is lost, more competitions are missed, and more careers are prematurely ended because of lameness than any other condition.

This book analyzes the causes, diagnoses, and management of the myriad causes of lameness:
--Defining and identifying the lame leg; spotting gait abnormalities and non-muscular causes; physical examinations and evaluations; diagnostic tools and other tests; the role of the veterinarian and farrier in pre-purchase examinations.
--Physical therapies; the applicability of rest, medications, and other veterinary procedures.
--Hoof conformation and shoeing options.
--Joint, bone, muscle, and tendon and ligament problems.
--Neurological, dermatological, and developmental orthopedic causes of lameness.
--Treatment of specific conditions to the foot, pastern and fetlock, cannon and splint bones, knee, upper foreleg, hock, upper hind leg, and back.

No other book covers this vital subject in such a comprehensive and understandable fashion. For that reason, no other book deserves a more prominent place on the shelf of anyone who owns, trains, rides, or drives horses.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Reference Book   March 16, 2010
M. Middleton (New Jersey)
The way I see it, there are topics with a slew of decent reference books, and then topics where one reference book essentially has it all. It can be hard on Amazon to tell if a book takes a fair approach to things and is a true reference book, or is just some subjective opinion being passed off as a reference book (like a certain book that insists that eggs are a key component of Gujarati cooking!)

With an astonishing amount of detail, this book goes into the ins-and-outs of horse lameness, from the basics (degrees of lameness) to the obscure but possible causes and treatments. The photographs are decent in some places and excellent in others, and the writing provides a clear appraisal of the situation. The best part is that, like Storey's guides, there is some level of accessibility here should a person with less experience be encountering the book as a learning guide; it is not insider-baseball.

I really feel that this guide is a cool, best-practice tool to have in your hip pocket whenever dealing with how to go about addressing situations regarding lameness.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!   October 29, 2009
Book Worm (USA)
My horse has severe navicular changes as well as bursitis and tendency to low grade laminitis, so lameness has always been a big issue. This book is amazing!! It's a great read, very interesting and not dry or boring. It covers all aspects of lameness as well as tests to help define where the problem comes from and tests a vet might do to aid in diagnosis. I HIGHLY recommend this book for every horse owner, whether or not your horse has any issues. It's a great have-on-hand.

A complex subject that needs a lot of input. This book helps with understanding horse lameness.

Good delivery.

This book was as informative as I have seen. I understood the descriptions and details even though they were written in technical terms and found all the answers I needed when I needed them.
