Amazon.com essential video San Francisco has been the setting of a lot of exciting movie car chases over the years, but this 1968 police thriller is still the one to beat when it comes to high-octane action on the steep hills of the city by the Bay. The outstanding car chase earned an Oscar for best editing, but the rest of the movie is pretty good, too. Bullitt is a perfect star vehicle for cool guy Steve McQueen, who stars as a tenacious detective (is there any other kind?) determined to track down the killers of the star witness in an important trial. Director Peter Yates (Breaking Away) approached the story with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, using a variety of San Francisco locations. Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Duvall appear in early roles, and Robert Vaughn plays the criminal kingpin who pulls the deadly strings of the tightly wound plot. --Jeff Shannon

Aspect ratio March 8, 2010 cs The specifications on the package of the Bullitt Blu Ray list the aspect ratio as 2.40:1. This is not correct. The aspect ratio is actually 1.78:1. If you are expecting 2.40:1 you will be disappointed, as I was. Also, Amazon, on this information page mistakenly lists the aspect ratio as 2.40:1 (probably because the manufacturer has it wrong on the packaging).
MCQUEEN'S PERSONAL FAVORITE, As Well As His Best Performance February 11, 2010 Waitsel Smith (Atlanta, GA USA) 1968 crime thriller about maintaining integrity in the face of pressure to compromise. Steve McQueen plays Detective Frank Bullitt, an honest but not always by-the-book cop that's given the assignment to protect a state's witness. A local politician (Robert Vaughn) is counting on this witness to earn national recognition for his breaking up a crime syndicate. When something happens to the witness, the politician tries to cover it up and to crucify Bullitt. But Bullitt is given 24 hours by his boss (Don Gordon) to find the killers.
This very gritty action film - based on real-life detective Dave Toschi (Zodiac Killings) and Robert L. Pike's novel, Mute Witness - was ground-breaking in its day, and is noted for having the most famous car chase of all time. Taking place in the streets of San Francisco and involving a souped up Mustang and a Dodge Charger, it is still considered the standard. No CGI here - these are real drivers doing real stunts. McQueen, who was a race car driver himself, wanted to do his own stunts; but because of the dangers involved, the filmmakers said no. He's still behind the wheel quite a bit.
Jacqueline Bisset plays Bullitt's girlfriend. You'll hear some terrific 60s music when they go out on the town. Robert Duvall plays a cab driver in one of his first scenes ever. Bullitt won the Oscar for Best Film Editing and was nominated for Best Sound. It also won other prestigious awards for its cinematography and script, as well as for its editing and sound. McQueen considered this his best performance, and his favorite of all his films. You won't want to miss it. Rated PG, but still very edgy.

Know the movie stars. February 10, 2010 Zack S. Mitchell (PA, USA) Bullitt is a great movie and is (or WAS if there's been a more recent one that I don't know of) reputed to contain the best car chase scene ever. Like the chases on Rockford Files, but longer, and nice and wild. Being an old guy, it came to my attention that some of the young guys never even heard of Steve McQueen. I think they should experience the old greats among stars, such as McQueen, Cary Grant, Edward G. Robinson, and so many others, at least as a basis for comparison with the stars of today. Back then you didn't have to have all the bad language to make a movie sell. Just a good plot, and good acting. I could say a lot more, but I hope this contains some new information for some, and also provides motivation to explore the fantastic quality of the better older movies and actors.
McQueen at his driving best. January 30, 2010 Fred in NJ (New Jersey) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this disk mainly for the car chase because it is one of the best chases I have ever seen in a movie. I believe that McQueen did all his own driving in the picture. If you like wild car chases, this is the movie to see again and again. I actually felt my stomach doing flip flops while I watched him chase the bad guys.
Cropped, and dark (blu ray) December 8, 2009 Chris Schmidt (Scottsdale, AZ United States) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The image is cropped, especially on the top and sides. I don't like seeing the tops of heads cut off in every other scene. It's grotesque.
The dark areas are too dark. Much detail is gone.
I'm new to blu ray. I thought they were supposed to look better, not worse, than DVDs.
