Amazon.com J.J. Abrams' 2009 feature film was billed as "not your father's Star Trek," but your father will probably love it anyway. And what's not to love? It has enough action, emotional impact, humor, and sheer fun for any moviegoer, and Trekkers will enjoy plenty of insider references and a cast that seems ideally suited to portray the characters we know they'll become later. Both a prequel and a reboot, Star Trek introduces us to James T. Kirk (Chris Pine of The Princess Diaries 2), a sharp but aimless young man who's prodded by a Starfleet captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), to enlist and make a difference. At the Academy, Kirk runs afoul of a Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto of Heroes), but their conflict has to take a back seat when Starfleet, including its new ship, the Enterprise, has to answer an emergency call from Vulcan. What follows is a stirring tale of genocide and revenge launched by a Romulan (Eric Bana) with a particular interest in Spock, and we get to see the familiar crew come together, including McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho), Chekhov (Anton Yelchin), and Scottie (Simon Pegg). The action and visuals make for a spectacular Big-Screen Movie, though the plot by Abrams and his writers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who worked together on Transformers and with Abrams on Alias and Mission Impossible III), and his producers (fellow Losties Damon Lindeloff and Bryan Burk) can be a bit of a mind-bender (no surprise there for Lost fans). Hardcore fans with a bone to pick may find faults, but resistance is futile when you can watch Kirk take on the Kobayashi Maru scenario or hear McCoy bark, "Damnit, man, I'm a doctor, not a physicist!" An appearance by Leonard Nimoy and hearing the late Majel Barrett Roddenberry as the voice of the computer simply sweeten the pot. Now comes the hard part: waiting for some sequels to this terrific prequel. --David Horiuchi

Uneven movie but high marks for the Blu-Ray November 23, 2009 Adron Gardner (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not a Trekkie, but I grew up watching the reruns of the old show and the original movies in the 80s. What makes Star Trek what it is for me are the characters.
While the reboot idea here is probably good for the long-run to take these established characters to new adventures, some things feel out of place big time. The old Spock angle was used in Generations with Kirk instead. I'm a huge Leonard Nimoy fan but cameos are a really lazy way to advance the series. Just tell an original story. How hard is it really? I did like the young actors for the most part. The script lacks the characterizations of Star Trek IV or the nifty plot of Star Trek VI. I would rank this one somewhere in the middle of the whole collection. In short, Star Trek is fun without being overly engaging.
Hopefully the next film will have a more solid script with some good science and some good ORIGINAL fiction.
The Blu-Ray presentation is fantastic and ranks with The Dark Knight and Transformers on quality viewing on my Panasonic Plasma. Sound too is really crisp on my surround sound. There are plenty of behind the scenes featurettes, which are decent, but I found the commentary to be pretty run-of-the-mill. I stopped listening to it about half way through.
So as another review here has said, its a fun movie. Yet not really a great Star Trek movie. But the Blu-Ray is still a great purchase and a sight to behold if you have the screen to show it off.
Star Trek rocks! November 23, 2009 Onllwyn C. Dixon 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I`ve been a fan of Star Trek since I was a kid. I've seen all of the incarnations of the series and films. I was in awe as I watched reruns of TOS and was thrilled to enjoy TNG in its first run. I recall TOS fans were in an uproar when TNG came on the air in 1987. The outrage was proven to be unfounded. I suspect the same will said of this new film.
I was prepared not to enjoy this reboot, but I did. The casting was spot on, effects were amazing, music was great, and there is an emotional subtext to the film. I was thrilled to see the relationship between Spock and Uhura. For all of the other long time fans that find fault with this film I would suggest you view it as an interpretation of the Star Trek mythos. There's room for the stories of the new/old characters to be told. Just enjoy the ride! Live long and prosper!
Great movie, even for non-fans November 23, 2009 groomRN (Illinois USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I saw this movie at the theater this summer and really enjoyed it. I was taken aback on the new direction taken by this new movie, and had a little trouble following it completely. Even so, I thought it was a good movie. Friends that went with me are not Star Trek fans, and they raved about what a terrific movie it was.
Having just watched it on dvd here at home, I have to say I LOVED it! I found so much more in it this time around, and had time to really appreciate the story, action, acting, humor, etc. I'm just speaking for myself, but being a huge Star Trek fan, I thought it was excellent in every way. And I'm thrilled the franchise has been renewed in such a positive way, and totally new direction. I can't wait for the next movie!!
BOYCOTT THIS FRANCHISE November 22, 2009 J. F. Rossi (Long Island, New York, USA) 3 out of 26 found this review helpful
It is my opinion that this is hands down, the worst trash I have every viewed in my life.
It appears the current owners of this series have casually decided that the star trek franchise was somehow inadequate.
In an instant the entire series has been rewritten, and for what; the sake of profits and commerce?
The haphazard way in which the characters are throw together absolutely disgusts and sickens me.
Clearly no thought has been given to the foundations of this franchise.
To me, there is no more vivid example of greed and capitalism run amok; than this "film".
I will never buy another star trek item of any type for so long as I live, nor will I go to see any future star trek anything.
Something wondrous has been taken and turned it into a mere product exactly like all the other action/adventure garbage clogging up the theaters these days.
I encourage everyone who reads this review to boycott this movie and anything to do with this franchise.
Fantastic blu-ray, and a great reboot of Star Trek! November 22, 2009 Blue Subie (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Viewed on a Panasonic 50" plasma via a Panasonic DMP-BD80 through a Yamaha RX-V869 receiver (5.1 speakers) and an HDMI splitter/amp.
The movie was outstanding, both PQ and AQ are demo quality. AQ - most of the onboard scenes have a lot of ambient audio with background conversations, but the kicker for fans is hearing the 60's era sound effects coming through your speakers in gorgeous Dolby TrueHD 5.1 . You'll want to rewatch the movie just to hear the battle sequences.
PQ - just from the opening, you can see EVERY pore on Faran Tahir's face. And the movie is consistently as good. This is a movie that requires home viewing on a 50" or larger screen, and corect seating distance.
Outstanding and recommendable, although at this writing, there is no BD live content for the disc.
