5 out of 5 stars Smithsonian   September 3, 2009
Victoria Carrington (Des Moines, IA USA)
I purchased a subscription to the Smithsonian for my parents who are retired and living WAY up in the mountains. They have remarked several times how much they enjoy it and specifically refer to articles they have read. It's the only gift I've ever gotten them that they rave about. They get one every so often so it's a gift that keeps on giving all year long (and gets me out of trouble if I only manage to get a call in on a birthday, Mother's Day, Father's Day . . .). It's a great magazine, different, intelligent and I enjoy reading it whenever I come across one. Wish I thought to get myself a subscription but. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Smithsonian Magazine : Educational, Intriguing & Enjoyable!   August 24, 2009

I only subscribe to a few magazines, but Smithsonian is one of them. I love the history channel and Discover magazine, and the Smithsonian fits perfectly with those. I enjoy reading about the numerous historical finds, scientific breakthroughs, etc that fill each issue. If you are not yet a subscriber, I would suggest visiting your local library to see if they have an issue you can read. If you are a fan of museums, watch the History channel, or read other magazines such as Discover, then you will most likely enjoy reading Smithsonian. The value you get for the annual subscription price is simply outstanding.

I thought I had a year's subscription but so far I've only received one issue. The magazine itself the only one I have received it's very well made, the photography, information etc. is great, if only I would get it.

5 out of 5 stars Support the Smithsonian!   February 6, 2009

Don't just subscribe to the magazine; become a member and contribute your share to the most functional entity in Washington DC! The various museums of the Smithsonian are or should be America's Pride, and America's face to visitors from around the world. And here's a useful tip: dollar for dollar, the best food to be had in DC is in the cafeteria of the Museum of the American Indian.

The Smithsonian magazine is one of four vaguely science/history mags that I've subscribed to for many years, along with Nature, Scientific American, Discover. Nature of course is in a class by itself, and it's not a remedial class. SA has gone bonkers. Discover rises and falls like the tides in the Bay of Fundy. The Smithsonian, though not always deep, is the most fun to read consistently.

In the current inevitable collapse of the Ponzi scheme called 'unregulated capitalism', the Smithsonian, as well as all other institutions of culture and knowledge, will be hard hit. Even if you can't accept the wisdom of Congress's 'Buy American' proposal, you CAN afford to support the Smithsonian and perhaps your local museum or theater. Do it! says Uncle Bruno.
