4 out of 5 stars Brandi Carlile   February 6, 2010
Cookie (NJ)
Enjoyed Brandi's first two CDs, and this one is just as good. She is a very talented musician. We discovered her when she opened for Chris Isaak a few years ago and are seeing her again tonight in NJ.

Brandi delivers again on another solid album. She takes you through every emotion in the human spectrum with her voice and catchy guitar riffs. I was singing along in no time and definitely got a few new favorites from this one.

4 out of 5 stars Brandi rocks   January 26, 2010

Though this is not my favorite Brandi Carlile record, she comes through as usual with incredible vocals and arrangements, and a wide variety of songs ... Dreams gets the most airplay where I live, and perhaps for that reason I find it the best rock-out song on the record. But all of them are works of art in true Brandi style.

I usually don't get an entire CD, I just grab good songs. This time, I got the whole CD, and I'm really glad I did. I love every one of these songs. The more I listen, the more I like them. Brandi is gifted, and we are lucky she is sharing. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Give it up for Brandi, y'all   January 10, 2010
Anthony Rupert (Milwaukee, WI)
I didn't get a chance to hear Brandi Carlile's first album, but I heard critics saying good things about it. Afterwards I picked up her second album The Story, which was so good that I rated it four-and-a-half stars. But it looks like the third time's the charm because her latest album Give Up the Ghost is even better than THAT.

As usual, the songwriting is handled by Brandi and her guitarist Tim Hanseroth, and together they craft quality tracks like, well, everything, but instant standouts are "Dreams", "I Will" and "Pride and Joy". "Before It Breaks" is easy to relate to, and although "If There Was No You" doesn't look like much on paper, it works. Elton John even shows up on this album (albeit only background vocals) to help deliver "Caroline".

It's just a shame Brandi is three albums in but she still isn't getting the recognition she deserves. Her last album is very hard to top, but Give Up the Ghost beats it. Pick it up.

Anthony Rupert
