works great! I use mine a bit differently.. November 22, 2009 Jeremy11 (Nashville, TN) This product works very well! Now it's designed to use one piece of newspaper and while that works... I don't get the morning paper so I don't have a stack readily available. So, what I do is I generally use the side burner on my propane grill to start the chimney and it takes only about 60 seconds to be lit.
I realize using a propane grill to start your charcoal is odd, but I'm using the charcoal for my Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker, not for actually charcoal grilling. I use propane for my grilling and charcoal for my smoking so for me it works perfectly and if you have a similar setup this will work well for you.
I have also used it twice using junk mail :) and it worked using that. But my preferred method is putting charcoal in the chimney, putting it on the side propane burner for about a minute and pulling it off, works perfectly!
The design of this unit is why it works so well, with a spiral spring giving the charcoal a pyramid shape in the bottom allows it to start faster. Weber removed the wood handle and put on a heat resistant plastic so that it can withstand the elements and you can tell when picking this thing up it's built to last. I highly recommend getting one of these if you need a chimney charcoal starter. I will say that I picked mine up at my local Lowes store for $14.99, saved a few bucks over Amazon's price of $18.99
Sounds a gimmick although in practice is first rate ! November 4, 2009 Dr. Jeffrey Bradford (New York USA) I spent a lot of time in the summer making barbeques and this season have continued into the autumn. Living up-state in the mountains I have struggled to get the coals going and even resorted once to using lighter fluid. Desperate for a solution I purchased the weber chimney and have so far used it twice - once in rain - and it has performed perfectly. I followed instructions to the letter - simply crushing newspaper into the base and placing coals atop them and used a match. An excellent device and highly recommended
Another great Weber creation November 1, 2009 Dave (New England, USA) I hate the taste of lighter fluid in my food, so I switched to chimney starters a long time ago. I used a no-name brand for awhile, and then broke down and paid for this Weber starter. I haven't looked back. I can't think of any way this starter could be improved. It's sturdy, well-ventilated, has plenty of space for charcoal, and just works. It's another example of when spending a couple of extra bucks over the no name is totally worth it. If you're serious about your barbecue, you need this!
You'll be ready to grill in 30 minutes October 26, 2009 John Bell (Central Illinois) This works great getting the charcoal ready to grill. When it is filled full the coals are ready in about 30 minutes from the time I start them. This even gets them going if there is a strong wind, which can sometimes be an impossible task without a chimney starter. Makes grilling a lot easier and you don't have to constantly be watching the coals to make sure they are going. With this I can can start it and come back in 30 minutes knowing that it will be ready.
Sturdy BBQ starter October 24, 2009 NaNaDC (WDC) Heavy duty long lasting chimney for quick starting your good old fashioned charcoal! No smells, no chemical taste on your food. The best taste and really fast to ignite the charcoal with just a little crumpled up newspaper.
