Product Description
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 PC

Amazon.com Product Description
Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series.

Story
The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, "Soap" MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs.

Gameplay
The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including "Soap" MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them.

Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy," just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the "Perk" System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through "kill streaks," the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches.

Special Ops Co-op Mode
Along with a single player mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern Warfare 2 also features an unique third main play option, Special Ops Mode. Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality.

Key Game Features

  • Challenging Multiplayer ModesModern Warfare 2 will contain a wealth of multiplayer modes including: the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy."
  • Improved AI Enemies – Improved artificial intelligence now allows enemies to attack from virtually any direction as players respawn into the game adding additional challenges.
  • An All-new Call of Duty Adventure - Modern Warfare 2 features an all new Call of Duty storyline revolving around the continuing struggles against the Russian rebel group the Ultranationalists, who have found a new and more dangerous leader.
  • The 'Special Ops' Optional Co-op Mode – "Special Ops" Mode allows two players, either alone or with a friend, to engage in unique mission play and features split-screen functionality.
  • Diverse In-game Environments - Battlegrounds traversed in the game range from the lonely, snow-clad mountains of Kazakhstan, to dark tunnels in the Afghanistan and the crowded slums of Rio.
  • Nonstop Action - Modern Warfare 2 contains no cutscenes, so players are always engaged in the action, no matter where they are in the game.
  • New Breach Gameplay Mechanic - Players can now blaze their own paths through the game by "Breaching" formerly impregnable obstacles like walls and doors with explosives.
  • New Gadgets, Weapons and Weapons System Modern Warfare 2 contains many new and updated weapons, new weapons attachments, as well as a variant of the multiplayer weapons customization system from Call of Duty 4, now available in the single player campaign.
  • New Perks and Increased Customization - Multiplayer modes feature new perks for leveling up, and for killstreaks and deathstreaks. Those awarded for streaks can customized in advance according to when they become available.

3 out of 5 stars COD mw 2   November 21, 2009

Game is very fun. But do not uninstall it and try to install it again you will not be able to activate the cd key again no matter what you do.

4 out of 5 stars Game is good but could've been much better   November 21, 2009
thelostspy007 (OH, USA)
The single player is nothing short of epic: underwater, ice climbing, in space, perfectly done. The campaign almost seems like a conglomeration of several different types with a boat chase as well. I loved playing the single-player campaign although I feel as if they should've made it longer. The material was there but it seemed like they wanted to secure enough story for a sequel.

Not worth $60. Luckily I preordered mine from another site for much less than that. In order to charge that price, no wait, NO video game should ever cost $60.

The multiplayer is completely different. It is almost an exact copy of Xbox matchmaking; you select the game type and the game pairs you with like-minded individuals. I am unsure of whether the ranks actually mean you play with other people of your rank. The first online game I played I was on a team with a rank 61, yet the match was fairly balanced. While many find this new system retarded for the PC version, I don't mind it much. For example, with MW1, searching through an endless list (several thousand) servers to find a game that I wanted to play took a lot of time. People are complaining about the time it takes while sitting in the game lobby yet for me it took less than 20 seconds for the initial pairings. After that, there are "intermissions" of varying times, some as long as 30 seconds. I usually create and edit classes during this time. I never once had a lag issue, although I do have a 12.5 Mbps connection.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro with a XFX GeForce 8600GTS 256MB, 4GB RAM and I can crank the graphics to the max, however, the game glitches in single-player for a brief second which has made me die many times. After changing the graphics to the lowest that went away but NO ONE will want to play on the lowest graphics settings. IW needs to fix this in a patch. Also, toward the end of the single-player campaign the game tries to load the last level but crashes to the desktop. A lot of people were having this problem so after reading forums online, I changed the graphics to lowest and completed the campaign. Frustrating? yes and it needs to be fixed. By the way, the audio is incredible in 5.1 surround. The game takes over 11 gigs of space, so it comes on two DVDs.

Whoever thought of removing the lean feature was a moron. If this game is supposed to be realistic, actual people would lean around a corner instead of completely moving their body into the line of fire. I don't know why they did this but it needs to come back.

Special Ops and Co-op mode are fun and playing with your friends in something other than multiplayer online is awesome.

There are hundreds if not thousands of unlockables! This is where the game is exciting. 10 prestige modes = 700 ranks!

Using Steam as the game browser is kinda dumb. I mean if you have a lot of Steam games it makes sense but for just one, not really. My guess is that they are using it to better keep track of your profile and achievements. Also, your serial key is registered on the Steam servers and with your Steam account. They say this is to "prevent piracy".

Overall, the game brings a lot of new things to the genre and is fun to play but the lack of a longer single-player campaign, no lean, addition of the required third-party Steam software (if you refuse to install Steam you can't play the game) of which is not labeled on the package at all brings the rating down to 4 stars. It could've been 3 stars but the fun factor brings it up. Don't listen to people who say no dedicated servers = the worst game ever because the multiplayer still works and is fun to play.

1 out of 5 stars I hate Steam   November 20, 2009
Frequent Buyer (Gig Harbor, WA United States)
If I could have read the "Steam required" for installation notice on the package, before I pre-ordered from Amazon, I would have passed. Why should I be required to let yet another company I don't trust have access to my PC when all I wanted is a single player shooter.

I have yet to get the game to install trying to work around the Steam system that continues to try to download the game. I have read some workarounds and may get it to work. But I have wasted so much time and I am so disgusted with with Activision for requiring the online installation via Steam that they, and by default Amazon for their products, have lost my business. Of course you have to open the package to try to install so if you can't get it done you lose and everyone else gets to keep your money. Forget getting anything useful from the Activision or Steam technical help system. Due to high volume we will ask you to load more information about your system into our database and will then give you boiler plate answers that are already posted and do not help...thank for the money sucker.

3 out of 5 stars Okay   November 20, 2009

I have been playing PC Games since the Commodore 64 and have owned all of the COD titles and loved them. I am not a hard-core player, but enjoy the playing time when I can get it with two young kids and a full-time job.

The Single Player is short, but very fun and the graphics were great.

I agree with some reviewers that although there are plenty of guns, then all pretty much seem the same (in each group - rifle, subgun, etc.)

The airport level is trash - no need to have it, except for shock and media value.

My multiplayer experience has been pretty good, so far. Although, I still prefer the 64 person games on larger maps like BF2.

The extra $10 for the PC version with the well-known lack of dedicated servers, ect. is very poor on Activision's part. I suspect that there wouldn't be half as much bitching about the game if it was sold for $50. Activision would have saved a lot of bad press, if they wouldn't have been so greedy.

As for the whole controversy regarding boycotting the PC version. All I can say is Activision probably knows the market better than we do...they spend big money and a lot of market research time on figuring these things out. They knew what they were doing. I think it was crappy, but with $350+ million in sales....looks like PC gamers got left out on this one. Don't know what to say....I hope the new DICE game lives up to expectations and gives PC gamers what they want. FPS games are still best on PC.

The petitioners rendered the page useless for potential shoppers.

"Rate the game low on amazon. Similar to spore."
"People would think it is a bad game and the sales will be worse."

"if you really want to make a difference you'll either have to just not buy the game or
you have to make it much more public a protest. an online petition is basically preaching to the choir. you need to reach the masses. and what someone suggested with lower amazon rating is a good idea. even add the reasons for why you marked it down in the comments. do it on other sites as well. this will hurt sales more than an online petition. this is what they would react to a lot more."

"But it's lying, why would you want to potentially hurt somebodies elses enjoyment of the game for your own reasons?"
"lol, payback is a ............well, you know :P"
