ATTENTION: PLEASE READ REGARDING SEARS, WHIRLPOOL, & PUR November 19, 2009 S. Scott Proud (Florence, KY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
It seems there are a LOT of misuderstandings in these reviews. If you own a Sears refridgerator it IS a Whirlpool, or Kitchen Aid, or whatever else with a "Kenmore" name plate on it. Sears doesn't make their appliances and they purchase appliance from varios companys and put their "Kenmore" brand on it. I have a Whirlpool fridge, Whirlpool dishwaher, and GE microwave. They all say Kenmore and the stainless stell matches perfectly. A Sears sales rep will tell you who makes the specific unit. This is true for Kenmore washers & dryers as well, all appliance. Secondly, Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, Kenmore, etc. do not make the filters. Sears, Whirlpool, etc. sell the filter with their markings on it. PUR make the filter. This is not a cheaper replacement for the filter, it is the same filter. I have been using PUR filters bought on-line for 5 years now and it is the same filter that came in the refridgerator when I bought it. The only thing to keep in mind is that the "universal PUR Filter", that fits all push button, in the grill units, does not have the same filtration as the the specific PUR filter that comes with the fridge. For example the "Universal" filter is about $26 on Amazon and my fridge came with a PUR 4396710 which cost about $32 on Amazon. Both will work, but the $32 unit filters out about 11 types of impurities, the $26 unit is 4 types. I buy the 4396710 to protect my 2 year old and wife. What is $7 more when it's your family's health. They are about $50 each at Sears.
I hope this information helps clear up some misconceptions and helps people make an educated decision on what to buy.
Fridge filters November 19, 2009 Elizabeth Garner 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unfortunately had to return product, thru no fault of what was sent. Numbers corresponded correctly to fridge, but the filters were slightly longer than what came w/ fridge.
Therefore it did not fit. Took to local store where bought fridge and they agreed correct filter, but also when compared to what came with fridge, was a little long.
I really appreciate the ease of returning items with Amazon.com. I printed UPS label at home and took to local UPS store. Thank you again for great service!
Great price, hard to change November 10, 2009 K. Berkshire (Richmond, VA, US) This is the best price on the net for this filter. Other stores charge much closer to $40 for one of these. It's hard to insert and you need to really apply pressure to it for it to work. I installed and did not put it in hard enough and I did not have filtered water for a few days. The water started to taste strange and I then realized I put it in wrong. You need to heard the wooshing sound to know it is installed properly. There really is not other option out there so you just need to get the hang of it.
It is what fits my fridge November 9, 2009 M. K. Pierce (Orange, CA United States) My fridge, a Whirlpool, is built to accept this cartridge, so in my case I do not have much choice as to what to buy. The filter works well, as the water it dispenses is always free of nasty flavors (tap water in my area has an unpleasant chlorine taste) but the price is still steep. $28 for such a non-serviceable filter does seem like an awful lot, and there is no off-brand alternative. I should note that the filter is also somewhat difficult to install, though that may be an issue related to my fridge's design rather than the filter itself.
PUR Refrigerator Filter November 4, 2009 Steve C. Smith The filter works just fine. It was easy to install and the water tastes fine.
