Product Description
WALT DISNEY'S MASTERPIECE

Amazon.com essential video
Along with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, the anthology set contains a third disc that examines a segment of both movies in detail. Each segment has an introduction that has experts (including Leonard Maltin), producer Roy E. Disney, or the animators setting up the piece's history. Notes on the music and dozens of design photos are included on all the segments, although others offer more intriguing features. Abandoned animation is shown on many segments, as are a few behind-the-scenes shorts; the most intriguing are experts from Walt Disney's hosted documentaries on how his company made movies. As for the photos, they are awkwardly catalogued and only the most patient of viewers would want to look at all of them. In some segments, though, these images are entertainingly produced as a "story reel," presenting these images--rough animation, sketches, pastel paintings--with the musical accompaniment. For those looking for a more well-rounded view of the films, the two one-hour documentaries on each film's disc lay the groundwork, but none of the anthology looks at how the first film was seen through the years or gives time to anyone who wasn't gung-ho about every element of the films. There is hardly a mention of embarrassing stereotypes that were matted (and still are) out of the "Pastoral" segment, or the intriguing aspect of the film as a '60s icon for the ultimate head-trip. Disney does let their guard down to show sequences that were being readied in 1940 for future editions (including a recently restored short scored to "Clair de Lune"). Most tantalizing is a look at how the special effects were done in the original film. The guide is a scrapbook that one of the technicians kept and was discovered only in 1990. Fans can only hope a reproduction will be made available someday. --Doug Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Dramatic DVD difference   March 7, 2010
William D. Wright (Spokane Wa USA)

After several years of trying to locate Fantasia on DVD locally, I turned to Amazon to obtain both films. Needless to say, I am knocked out by the DVD versions and on my new Sony HD set with a Blu-Ray player spinning the discs, I am not disappointed. In fact, I want to view the films in total black some night so I can truly have the experience. Mr Stokowski knew exactly how to handle the music and disney knew how the animation should go. That is why Fantasia has always ranked high on my list of must haves. Fantasia 2000 with Levine wasn't too bad either. I think that having Roy Disney on as animator helped that film. As an example of great animation, these two films are fantastic. the third disc in the set which has all the extra stuff is also good. I just never though there was that much left over from a project of this magnitude. all I can say: If you haven't seen Fantasia on DVD, get hold of this set as you will soon see what I saw upon initial viewing: A fantastic piece of film that is worthy of a place in the film collection.

5 out of 5 stars A STUNNING ACCOMPLISHMENT, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 9.5 OUT OF 10   January 19, 2010
ACEMAN1 (Ripon, California)
I have always loved Fantasia ever since I was little. But about ten years ago, one of my VCRs decided to destroy the tape version and I was damn well pissed. Years later I finally got it on DVD, but this time it's even better than ever. Even though this film is 70 years old, it's still an awe-inspiring film that still amazes to this very day.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: I can't really give a plot summary because this film jumps all over the place. It's basically a series of music videos for classical music as well as some romantic period music. The shorts are either abstract objects or some tell their own stories.
MUSIC: The music is absolutely magnificent and is made even better by the animated shorts created for them. There is nothing wrong with this area.
ACTING: There is really none. There is not much in terms of dialogue except from the host and one small Mickey Mouse part. Other than that there is nothing else to it.
ACTION: This film is very surreal and odd, and almost makes you question if perhaps these film-makers were on some sort of hallucinogenic drugs. This film is also very random from the abstract pieces to musical scenes involving dance sequences with alligators, hippos, ostriches, and elephants all in one, to telling the tale of the Earth's creation and the life and death of the dinosaurs, to a tale of sorcery and brooms coming to life, to a small bit about Satan and then being followed by playing Avi Maria, to Greek mythology, and more, this film has so much packed in that's just so strange. However, if you're easily bored you will hate this film because there is almost no talking. In this DVD version there are new scenes not seen since its release in 1940 such as more dialogue from the host as well other extras such as interviews.
OVERALL: This film is still amazing even after 70 years and there is no question as to how it has gone on to become a classic. With beautiful animation and music, this film soars high and will leave a definite impression upon you.
THE GOOD: Great animation, magnificent music, inspired music videos, new features, and it feels like a wonderful and surreal dream.
THE BAD: It can get a tad dull and there is almost no dialogue.
