MiFi 2200 Features
Developed by Novatel Wireless, the MiFi 2200 lets you create a personal Wi-Fi cloud capable of sharing the reliability and high-speed Internet connectivity of the Sprint 3G Mobile Broadband network with up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as notebooks, netbooks, cameras, gaming devices or portable media/MP3 players. Small enough to carry in your shirt pocket, it combines a variety of features into its streamlined form factor, including integrated internal CDMA and Wi-Fi antennas, advanced security and authentication technologies. It also features auto-install, autoconnectivity, Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) support, VPN capability, and a removable lithium-ion battery. You'll also get two-way text messaging when you connect via USB.

  • Type A USB port compatibility via included microUSB cable
  • PC compatibility: Windows 2000, XP and Vista and Mac OS X 10.4.0 or higher and Linux

How MiFi Works
MiFi creates a personal cloud of high-speed Internet connectivity that can be easily shared among up to five users and a variety of WiFi-enabled devices through its connection to America's most dependable 3G network,* the EVDO Rev A Sprint Mobile Broadband Network. For example:

  • College student: A college student tucks her MiFi 2200 in her backpack to study with friends at the park and uses it to listen to streaming radio on her MP3 player while she connects to the school's Intranet on her laptop to get details on a class assignment. She takes a break to take pictures of her pals with her Wi-Fi enabled digital camera, and the camera uses the MiFi's signal to upload the photos to Facebook while she emails her completed report to her professor, then uses the device's GPS capability to find a nearby pizza place for lunch.
  • Business travelers: Two business travelers share a cab to the airport, then wait for their flight. Sharing the signal of one MiFi 2200 device that is safely tucked away in a briefcase, they download emails and surf the Internet on their notebooks and stream music to their MP3 players.
  • Portable retail: Five vendors at a local art fair have kiosks in close proximity. Accessing one MiFi 2200 device's signal, they each run a credit card point-of-sale device over WiFi and have secure backhaul.

5 out of 5 stars My, oh Mi: Sprint's MiFi, What a Handy Device! A Critical Review.   January 19, 2010
Andre Lawrence (Miami, Florida)

Conclusion

I've been using the Sprint MiFi since Thanksgiving and I'm happy to report that the MiFi has done exactly what the company said it would do.

The Sprint MiFi is a silver, credit card-size portable router. So, if you have one of those router connected to the phone line and the computer... this is the same thing except it is free of any cables. I bought the MiFi based on the early pre-release reviews and because I wanted to upgrade from the access card the Novatel U720 which took up one of my valuable USB ports. The immediate effect is that I have now a "high speed" internet access for my laptop and a wifi speed for my T-Mobile (Edge-enabled) Blackberry Curve. Not to be confused, the MiFi is NOT as fast as those Cable internet connections. It's as fast, however, as the wireless connection is though.

Installation.
The MiFi package comes with a small instruction booklet but I found actually connecting my Apple laptop via the Airport card very difficult. I called Sprint and it took us the better part of 30-40 minutes until the MiFi gave us the signal. That has been the only drawback to this.

Connection.
The MiFi gives you a 3G (and promises to give you 4G when it is rolled out in your city) here in Miami (FL) more specifically, South Miami, Sprint's service has always been mediocre, even with the Novatel U720. If the signal is weak, then no device will give you a better performance. However, the MiFi did give me advantages that made me want to upgrade.

The MiFi card also becomes extremely hot. I normally have a small fan blowing cool air into the vent of my laptop, I just draped the MiFi over the fan and the card remains cool.

Advantages.
Portable. The MiFi is no bigger than 3 credit cards stacked. It fits comfortably in a shirt pocket and is completely detached.
You can connect up to 5 devices from it. I have connected 2 devices and there's no discernible slowing down of service.
The card can be programmed to have a secured connection. So, if you're out and about, you can create a WiFi connection for only the people you allow a connection for.
The card is now $50 with a 2-year agreement from Sprint (I paid $150 w/ $50 mail-in-rebate.)

Disadvantages.
The card can become extremely hot to the touch, if not with a fan or some kind of ventilation near.
Installation will require a quick call to Sprint as the supplied information was not enough.
The device is good for about three (3) not four hours of battery life.

Conclusion.
The MiFi has nothing to do with the download limit set by the company (i.e. Sprint) this device only access what is available and it does just what it promises. This portable router can literally give several people internet access just by being near this object. This is a handy device to own.

4 out of 5 stars I am a hot-spot!   January 6, 2010

As a long time Mobile Broadband user who regularly puts these devices through their paces, I can say with certainty that this is one of the best mobile broadband devices that I have used.

Having recently switched from Windows to Mac and not being under contract for my current Sprint (Novatel Wireless) S720, I set about looking for a device that wouldn't take up one of my precious few USB connections. Well, that quickly eliminated all the current Mac compatible offerings and left the Mifi as one of my only options.

Still I was a bit wary and certainly did not want to drop the $100 that Sprint wanted for the device before rebate without some assurance it would work well. Additionally i was reluctant to give up my grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan as I use this device extensively while traveling for work.

After shopping around a bit I found some resellers that were offering the device for no out of pocket costs and who assured me they could keep my old plan, I pulled the trigger, and I do not yet regret it.

I have used the device for Email, Web Browsing, Video Conferencing and Skype and have found it to be as reliable as the S720 it replaces.

Setup was a breeze and ongoing management of the device via the web access has been painless.

As far as the device itself, It is a little bit on the cheaply made side (plastics are thin and the finish is lower end), but the fit and overall build of the device seems solid. We will see how it holds up to the abuses of frequent travel.

The device does get warm while in use and the battery life is a bit short (not unexpected for a device this small powering two full time radios and a GPS Receiver on occasion).

I like the feature of being able to turn the LEDs off to both save on power and to make the device less "Vegas Glitzy" obvious.

Overall it is a solid performer that comes in at a great price point, and functionally offers great flexibility if you need to get several people online at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars Works good...   November 27, 2009

I honestly think this device works good for the most part. Yeah sometimes I do get disconnect from the internet but quickly connects back. I love this device and I use to for my home internet and take it along when I travel. I'ts quick for the most part the download speed is close to 1 mbps. Just keep in mind that no cell phone company has a perfect service. So if you thinking of getting a mobile internet card I would recommend the Sprint Mi Fi.

I decided to upgrade to the MiFi from my Ovation u727 and I am 100% glad that I did. My connection is faster and sharing my service with others does not slow my connection down (unlike the u727). I'm even considering canceling my DSL at home... it's that good.

5 out of 5 stars Great Device   October 3, 2009

Simple directions. Setup was quick and easy. Fast link to 3G. Strong signals. Quick loading of pages. This is a super product.

It helps to check coverage in your area first !!!!! If Sprint's not good for you, check Verizon. MAKE SURE you check 3G coverage and NOT cell phone coverage in your areas. This uses 3G network so cell coverage is totally irrelevant. Both of the two cities I need to use this in most have total Sprint 3G coverage. I love this product and it's perfect for when I am away from my home or work wifi nets.

By the way, stop whining about 5gb limit. If you're not trying to stream music and videos/movies, this is plenty, especially if you're trying to use this to replace a home internet connection. This is for a specific purpose and in that context this is a GREAT product.
