    WD Vet Center Opens!
Posted on Monday, January 15 @ 08:00:07 MST
Veterinary HealthWhether your dog works as a Police K9, Assistance Dog, SAR, Herding, or competes in Schutzhund or other sports, we have felt that one of the features that our visitors really need is the ability to "Ask a veterinarian". Workingdogs.com gets between 10-20 medical related questions a week, so we decided the best thing would be to open a vet center for the Working Dog. Dr. Randy Acker is hosting Question and Answer Forums on the topics of Canine Trauma, Orthopedic questions, and Working Dog and Sports Medicine. Dr. Acker is the first of several veterinarians which will be joining our new center, so be sure to check back often to see which new areas we add.

Quite simply if you have a working dog, you need a good resource of information as well as the tools to be able to handle canine emergencies, and information available on other health topics like sports medicine and orthopedic questions.

Working Dogs is happy to announce that Dr. Randy Acker has joined our team and will host some message forums where our readers can post questions related to canine trauma treatment, working dog and sports medicine, and orthopedic questions. We do want to stress that these forums are to address questions to help you prepare for the event of canine injury, they are not designed to be a replacement for your vet in the event of an emergency and if your dog is injured you should seek care with your vet before trying to use the forums. You can go to the forums by clicking here.

In addition to providing this valuable resource of information, Dr Acker is providing the Working Dogs Outfitter with the "Field Guide to Dog First Aid" manual, videotape, and Advanced Canine First Aid Kit. You can read my review of the products by clicking here.

Dr. Randy Acker is a graduate of Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has been the owner and medical director of Sun Valley Animal Center since 1982. Dr. Acker's special interest is medical and surgical care for the working, sporting and outdoor dog. This special interest has become an essential part of his practice over the past 10 years, generating orthopedic surgery referrals from around the country.

Dr. Acker was an invited speaker at the IVMA Summer 2000 Meeting, speaking on "Current Issues in Small Animal Orthopedics." Dr. Acker has also produced a video - "Advanced Canine First Aid for Sporting Dogs." He worked as the veterinary consultant for the Emmy award winning film, "Wolf - Return of a Legend," and was the official veterinarian at the 1995 National Amateur Field Trials. In 1999, Dr. Acker received the 1999 "Honoree of the Year" award from Canine Companions for Independence. Dr. Acker is affiliated with several local and national veterinary associations. These include the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, Veterinary Orthopedic Society, and the Idaho Veterinary Medical Association.
