4 out of 5 stars Great "beginner" type book full of useful illustrations   October 25, 2009

Exactly my review title suggests, this is a great book written with many photos of dogs.
The book's main purpose is to teach you the different signals dogs use to calm each other (and when they try to calm us!).
I have read a few dog behavior books and still found this one useful.
But in general, the good is very basic and great for those just starting to read about dog behavior.
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because I wish there was more to it.
I would recommend because of the great photos!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book For Understanding Your Canine   September 20, 2009

On Talking Terms With Dogs - Calming Signals

Owning this book will benefit you by helping you understand your Dog and what he/she may be trying to tell you.

I have owned Dogs for most of my life. Any of my friends would consider me to be very good with animals. Most people would consider my Dogs to be very well trained. All of my Dogs responeded well to me as the Pack Leader.

However I must say I trained my Dogs Completley Wrong. I trained my dogs out of fear instead of patience. I never abused any of my pets by hitting them except for an occasional minor swat with a newspaper. I suppose yelling at your Pet could be considered verbal abuse just as easily.

The good news is! this is not neccesary when you know how to read your dogs body language.

On Talking Terms With Dogs - Calming Signals is a must read and a great beginning for understanding your Dogs body language. This will help you become a better Pack Leader by understanding the Calming Signals your Dog may be giving you.

Learning these signals will make you a better pet owner. I think any Dog Owner Should read and understand what this book teaches. I wish more people would understand that owning a pet is a very real responsibility. I think too many people get a Dog and expect it to be a Great Dog without any real training. Dogs are very simple creatures and want nothing more than to please their Masters. However, it is our responsibility to teach them by becomming a Good Pack Leader. Learning how to read their Body Language is the First Step.

In most cases, it is not the Dog that is bad, but its owner. Having a Great Dog is up to us, and this book is a great way to start you on the path of understanding your dog and improving your relationship with him.

I THINK THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT OWNING A PET AND DEVELOPING A GREATER RELATIONSHIP THAN YOU EVER THOUGHT POSSIBLE.

5 out of 5 stars Turid Sees into the Dog Heart and Mind   August 21, 2009

I love On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals. I believe it is one of the best books I have ever read about dogs. Turid Rugass has closely observed dogs and seen their intelligence, and warm caring spirits. She has described her insights in a way that is easy for others to understand and implement with their own dogs. I have had a variety of dogs for the last 20 years, and I found her book to take my understanding of dogs to a whole other level. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to communicate more effectively with dogs, and treat them with kindness, respect and dignity.

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes a yawn is just a yawn   July 3, 2009

I've read the book several times and found it useful in understanding my dogs and showing me that dogs have a language however I can't believe that everything a dog does is part of language. There are bodily functions like yawning that could mean that the dog needs oxygen rather
than it's trying to communicate.

All in all I think it's better than the DVD but they both are better than either one alone. I also don't believe that positive only is the way to go. A dog is entitled to the consequences of his bad behavior.
