Autism Unlocked ! September 15, 2009 J. Radke (Alberta, Canada) This taught me so much about Autism. The biggest learning - Never give up - Never slow down - There is an end - Try everything anyone can think of - you can never know what might click for your child. Very interesting perpective at the end from the boy. Should be mandatory for all teachers and available to all families.

Helpful for those with Autistic kids July 3, 2009 Noelani (Dallas, TX) I got this book from the library because it was one of the books for my ward's bookclub. I had never heard of it before now.
It is a true story of an autistic boy Dale and how his dog Henry helps him. The author Nuala is the mother of Dale and tells a very detailed story of what it was like for her family to deal with Dale, his developmental issues, and health and educational professionals.
I enjoyed reading this book and was reminded of some of my former clients who also struggled with Autism. I was amazed at how much progress Dale made and all the hard times his parents went through to fight for him. As a social worker, I have been on the other side of the picture. But this gave me an opportunity to see how life was for this family with an autistic toddler. I worry that in the past I may have responded in similar ways as some of the professionals in the book did. This book gave me a new appreciation for families who deal with troubled children.
The story takes place in Scotland, and therefore it will also give you a chance to see what kind of English grammar I have to deal with here in the UK. Finally, I would not recommend this book to anyone who has recently given up a dog--it made me cry more than once for the loss of my own sweet puppy. (I really need to stop reading books about dogs! I recently finished another book about a lady who raises a guide dog and then had to give it away after a year. And let's not talk about my experience while watching I Am Legend!)
Heart Warming story June 11, 2009 H. Dean (Australia) A wonderful, heart warming tale of a mother's battle to introduce her child to the outside world, a son who is locked inside his own world of autism. The book is not an English master piece which is what I like the most about it - the written style was real, it was a real tale from a real mothers love for her son and her eternal gratitude to his 4 legged companion.
I would recommend for anyone who believes in the power of having an animal companion, dog lovers and mothers world wide....sometimes the right help comes from the most unexpected places.
A lovely and hopeful book June 3, 2009 Karen Potts (Lake Jackson, Texas) Having an autistic child is not easy, especially for parents who have difficulty conceiving and who have long anticipated a loving, normal boy or girl. Dale Gardner was a child who was locked in his own world, without the skills or abilities to communicate with those around him. His parents were distraught at his diagnosis, but were also determined to break through the barriers which separated them from their son. When Dale's mother Nuala noticed how Dale responded to someone else's dog, she decided that their family needed to get a dog to help increase Dale's interactive skills. Their Golden Retriever, Henry, was all that they hoped for and more. He not only became Dale's first and best friend, but he was also a wonderful companion for all the family members. This is a lovely book by a mother who is giving tribute to the joy and companionship that Henry was able to bring to her son and the rest of the family.
