Amazon.com Review Fueled by a passion for running dogs, Gary Paulsen entered the Iditarod--the 1150-mile winter sled-dog race between Anchorage and Nome-- in dangerous ignorance and with a fierce determination. Winterdance is his account of this seventeen-day battle against Nature's worst elements and his own frailty.
Product Description Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. Map and color photographs.

great book September 17, 2009 C. J. Naugle (Northwest North Carolina) We have four siberian huskies and dry mush with three, to be able to run our dogs in the snow is a fantasy for us. We are both from Northern states and now live in the south, where we can not even dry mush for 6 months of the year. This book was a virtual treat.
LOL August 26, 2009 Seaduck (Arlington, VA) I'm not sure I could recommend this as "bedtime" reading material. I kept bursting out laughing so hard that I almost fell out of bed. My partner thought I had lost what is left of my mind, that is, until she read it and had the same reaction. Marvelous book. Hard to imagine who wouldn't love it.
Fantastic! August 24, 2009 Horsegirl (Rancho Santa Fe, CA United States) This book was amazing; I couldn't put it down. What a wonderful, interesting, funny read, yet very serious as well. His description of running of the Iditarod showed what a truly amazing feat it is. I had no idea of the absolute hardship and utter madness of it ! I read it in two days and had to give it directly to my husband, who had been listening to me laugh - there is one chapter I laughed at so hard I was crying!

The book arrived in very poor condition and shouldn't even have sold, rather, it should have been thrown out. I learned a valuable lesson on this transaction. It only cost .21 but I paid #3.95 for shipping and had to throw the book out. It was filthy dirty, dog-earred and I couldn't even read it. The seller described it as in "very good condition". I would hate to see what they thought was poor condition.
Book Club Must! April 6, 2009 L. Smith 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As mentioned by almost every other review, this book is incredibly funny! & importantly this is done without coming across as trying too hard. Gary's straightforward honesty is shocking in that many people, myself included, would probably never try to get their many mistakes published out of sheer embarrassment. Telling friends & family of your funny learning experiences is one thing, but exposing your bad choices to the world for their entertainment takes an incredible level of confidence or great sense of humor & humility. My whole book club read this one all the way through no matter their reading material preferences. I'd recommend reading it around February or March since that is when the Iditarod occurs & will enhance your appreciation of the news coverage.
As some people note but it is not mentioned in the book (that i remember), the Iditarod race is a completely inaccurate replication of the original event it commemorates & there is little to no justification to put so many dogs through such a hazardous run. Everyone knows society has always used &/or abused animals for entertainment purposes but many have strong feelings against these practices. Horse racing, greyhound racing, dog fights, cock fights, circuses, agility courses, the Iditarod. Culturally, American acceptability seems to be based on the amount of physical harm the animal experiences & this book tends to minimize the bad while emphasizing how much the dogs love it. Having not done the race myself or known anyone personally who has, I am keeping an cautious open mind for now.
It's a great read!
