Amazon.com Review First published in 1963, Hop on Pop remains a perennial favorite when it comes to teaching kids to read. Here, as in most of his extensive body of work, Dr. Seuss creates uncomplicated, monosyllabic rhymes to foster learning and inspire children to read. But what was radical about this little book at the time of publication (and what makes it still compelling today) is Seuss's departure from the traditionally dull pictures and sentences used in reading primers. In contrast, the illustrations here are wild and wonderful, and the accompanying language, while simple, is delightfully silly. For example, the rhyme "THREE TREE / Three fish in a tree / Fish in a tree? / How can that be?" is brought to life with a trio of plump, self-satisfied fish perched atop globular branches as two stymied hybrid dog-rabbit-humanoids look on in consternation. Hop on Pop does much more than teach children the basics of word construction, it also introduces them to the incomparable pleasure of reading a book. (Ages Baby to Preschooler)
Product Description A condensed, board book version of the classic bestseller, perfect for babies and toddlers. Introduces the youngest readers to the wonderful world of Seussian word play.

Perfect for Beginning Readers... October 30, 2009 ThisThatNEverything (Columbus, Ohio United States) This is an excellent book for beginning readers. Although there are 64 pages, none of them are very wordy. The rhyming & pictures really helps the kids figure out what the words are. My 6-year-old loves reading this book & he's constantly going around saying some of the things that were in the book & making up his own rhymes. I can't think of a better book to help new readers learn to read better. This book isn't really a continuous story so it's easy to put a bookmark in & pick up at later time if needed. I highly recommend this book.
"I Can Read This One All By Myself!" August 26, 2009 Karen Joan (Texas) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After my preschooler started learning to read with the Bob Books, I wanted to mix in some different material to help her apply what she was learning to other books. HOP ON POP, by the legendary Dr. Seuss, was the perfect choice. HOP ON POP uses rhyming words and short, active sentences to help children extend their reading vocabulary and build up their sight words.
The brilliance of HOP ON POP stems from using rhyming words to teach common diphthongs and letter combinations, and then adding or changing only one or two initial letters to form new words. From these new words, Dr. Seuss then creates the wild and zany sentences he is famous for, and are easy for very young children to read. As a possible example, using "at" as the basic letter pair, you can form the words cat, hat, sat, and bat. The silly sentence then might be "The cat in the hat sat on a bat," accompanied by a wacky and wonderful Sessian illustration showing the cat in the hat sitting on the end of a baseball bat. At 72 pages, HOP ON POP has many basic letter patterns that really help a young one build their reading skills fast.
My wee one loves to read HOP ON POP to me. She can do it all by herself, with very little prompting, and her pride and confidence in her new skills are through the roof because of HOP ON POP. HOP ON POP has really helped to increase her sight word vocabulary, as well as her ease and comfort in sounding out new words. HOP ON POP really is a perfect first reader.
Disappointed June 2, 2009 R. Beck 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book arrived with two dents in it from the shipping, I suppose. Also I ordered the book on May 2 and did not get it until June 1. This was very disappointing.
Cute Book March 31, 2009 Karen My 6 month old daughter enjoys having this book read to her. I was surprised by how small the book is - it is much smaller than your average board book. I'm pretty sure its a shortened version of Hop on Pop, there also aren't very many pages. It is perfect for my very young daughter though!
excelent February 11, 2009 H. sadowski This is a great book for younger children and children learning to read. It's lots of fun to read with all the silly stories.
