Final Exit is good reading November 6, 2009 Ken (Honolulu) Never mind the Dogooders and Moralists. If you really want to kill yourself you
should read this book. You may change your mind. There's a good chance you could
Botch it and end up worse off than before. Like Paralyzed with a damaged Brain.
Of course You could always jump off a 10 story building, But read the book first.
Things that make you go "hmmmmmmmmm..." August 12, 2009 M. Harris (FT Hood, TX) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I normally don't review books that I haven't read, and this really isn't a review so much as an expression of my surprise that there are reviews. I don't understand where they get the favorable reviews, since those who would be in a position to write them would, having followed the advice in the book, be unable to do so, being, well, dead. I'd expect negative reviews, to be sure, like, "I'm still alive! This book sucks." Who would have read it, prepared to implement its instructions and then, just before taking the final step, made sure that they wrote a glowing review for Amazon just as their lights went out? "Farewell, cruel world, my pain is almost over. And by the way, I give Final Exit four stars."
But the thing that really confuses me is that there are used copies for sale. Where do they get the used copies from? Estate sales? I mean, who reads a suicide handbook, then makes sure that the used copy gets to a bookstore before killing themselves? For that matter, I'd think that the last thing that a family member or loved one would want around is the deceased's copy of Final Exit, so it would end up trashed rather than resold, unless the deceased really stiffed them in the will. Maybe that's how they got there: "Huh, $20 million left to the cat all I got was his copy of Final Exit? Where's that used book store?" Of course, I assume that the used books are in good condition. It's not like anyone would read them twice.
Undoubtedly the most authoritative book on the subject (the 3rd edition) August 3, 2009 Richard N. Cote (Mt. Pleasant, SC) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The third edition of this landmark book (the only edition anyone today should read), first published in 1991 and constantly updated, remains the most authoritative book of its kind. From the outset, the book was designed solely for the use of rational adults who are in extreme, unendurable pain and suffering and want to end their lives in a painless, certain, and dignified manner. The author is clear in stating that if someone does not agree that the right to end one's own life is, indeed, entirely a personal choice and the exercise of an innate civil liberty, they should not buy, borrow, lend, or use this book. Having made that clear, he presents the best available methods and procedures that will enable someone to end their life at the time, place, and under circumstances of their own choosing. For good reason, Humphrey is generally conceded to be the world's foremost authority on self-deliverance methods. In 1975, he helped his cancer-riddled wife, Jean, end her life at her request when her bones were breaking at random and the painkiller cocktails prescribed by her physicians no longer worked. Five years later, he founded The Hemlock Society, which by 1991 was the largest death-with-dignity organization in the United States. In those eleven years, he supported the development and worked with the developers of every modern, legal self-deliverance method in use today. Over 1.5 million copies of the book have been purchased, and it has been translated into twelve languages. In an age where technology can artificially extend heartbeats and respiration long after a person's will or ability to withstand the unwanted pain and loss of dignity, Humphry provides the best possible and least-disturbing ways to gently end one's own life. Richard N. Cote', author of "A Brief History of the NuTech Group" (Corinthian Books, 2008).
a dangerous book to have available to all...... July 9, 2009 Smartboo (East Sussex, UK) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book starts off asking you to imagine being terminally ill and that all medical treatments have been exhausted. I ask you to imagine finding someone you love dead after they have read this book to assist them in taking their own lives when they are fit and healthy? I lost a close friend this week who had used this book to take her own life; she was fit, healthy and in no way terminally ill. Her partner found her when it was too late and has to live with that image in his head for ever.
I am interested to see that this book has been described as not being aimed at those who are suicidal but those that are terminally ill. One question; how do you know who is looking at this type if information? This type of book should be controlled in some way to ensure that those who have other paths they can choose such as counselling or medication to get them through a difficult period in their life can do so. Due to books like this I and a number of others have lost friends, relatives or partners who without this kind of information may have been able to seek help and still be here now...
THIS BOOK ASSISTED MY SON"S SUICIDE! March 5, 2009 Kathleen Sharp (Shorewood Il) 6 out of 14 found this review helpful
Some may believe the right to choose to die is each person's right. My 26 year old son bought this book and used the information in it to commit suicide. He left it at his bedside beside his body. No one can understand the depth of pain this has caused. If you are considering buying this book for this reason. Stop! Your family and friends will be absolutely devastated by the pain of grieving. Seek others to help you. This is not the answer. Suicide because you are depressed is a permanent response to a temporary problem..Please talk to others, share your feelings and concerns. You can make a different choice to ease your pain. The grieving mother of a beautifully hansome, intelligent, creative, now deceased son.
