Product Description
Pulitzer Prize-winning Berkeley Breathed's first illustrated novel!

Sam the Lion is actually a priceless dachshund, bred to be a show dog. More important, he is Heidy's best friend—and she needs one like never before. Living with her reclusive uncle is hard, but Sam has a way of making her feel soft and whole. Until the day Sam is framed by the jealous poodle Cassius, and is cast out by Heidy's uncle, alone on the wild streets, where he is roughed up by a world he was not bred for. Sporting a soup ladle for a leg, Sam befriends other abandoned dogs and journeys all the way to the Westminster Dog Show, where his plan for revenge on Cassius takes an unexpected turn when he and Heidy spot each other after years of being apart.

Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author Berkeley Breathed's first illustrated novel is a heartwarming and humorous ode to the unconditional and lasting love we and our pets share.

as someone who works in animal rescue...many times saving those who may have some baggage this is a cheerful and amusing account of those dogs and the joy they find inspite of all they have been through.

Started reading and could not put it down. A very enjoyable store. Hated to see it end.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Book   October 17, 2009
Michael Nay (NY, US)
This was a cute kids book focused on the life of "Sam the Lion", the main dog from Breathed's picture book by the same title. One thing to note, this is definitely aimed at a younger audience, so adults, don't expect an overly complex plot.

However it was certainly a cute book, and I do recommend it if your a fan of Breathed. A lot of the dialog reminded me of Bloom County.

I got this on the Kindle, and though it's black and white, the illustrations were scanned in very well. I'm not sure if they were in color in the print edition or not.

It's also a surprisingly quick read. I got through it in one day.

5 out of 5 stars children should read this to adults   October 8, 2009

Children know- they do- they know so much more than most adults, especially when it comes to dogs, and talking to dogs. Adults have forgotten how. This book tells it like it is for so many of our dogs . Millions are killed every year in shelters because there is not enough room , and people get dogs and dump them like disposable diapers. No caring person can read this book without rage and tears. No caring person can read this book without laughter and hope. Hope, because all of us who rescue flawed dogs need that to keep us going. Laughter, because the author nails the truth of the "dogshow" people. And the rage and tears , well, read the book. Then, go to a shelter and walk a dog. Go back, take some kids and walk a dog again. Go again, and again, and keep going. Dogs need walks, shelters need volunteers, and Everyone NEEDS to get their dogs Spayed and Neutered. EVERYONE. While millions die, there is no reason to breed, not ever. Don't breed or buy while homeless pets die.
