5 out of 5 stars Good reading   January 30, 2009
Ben Blackburn (Napa Valley, CA USA)
A good view into the world and beliefs of one of the last Native American Scouts, and how he trained his students.

I highly recommend you read Tom Brown Jr's books, but only if you are prepared to try out and practice what they contain, because if you just sit on your arse inside your nice warm house, they will do absolutely nothing for you. If you can't take the time or money to go back to Tom's Tracker School, do a Google search for wilderness schools, primitive skills groups, outdoor education, etc. near you. There are such groups all over the world. Many of them don't cost anything. Or, just find your own patch of nature near you, and let yourself become aware of all there is surrounding us. It can change your life! (Please note, the becoming aware of nature part is more important than the reading the book part. The books just help point you in the right direction!)

5 out of 5 stars Tom Brown, Jr. "Grandfather"   January 22, 2009
Mark A. Puentes (Santa Rosa, CA USA)
I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it! I feel this book is really relavent in a time like now. We as a society have been living out of rythm and at odds with nature and now find our world, at so many levels is in state of peril. This book reminds of how an ancient people lived purely in harmony with nature. We can never turn the clock back in time, but "Granfather" can teach us possibly were we might find some place to start and find some harmony with are home(Earth)!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Biography On A Wonderful Person   January 6, 2009
Cerebellum
"Grandfather" tells of the life of Stalking Wolf, Tom Brown's Native American teacher. It describes many of his great feats, and how he was able to become so close to nature. Every person should read this book, but Tom Brown fans should definitely read it. This book gives many important insights into the life of the man who influenced Tom so heavily. I only wish that Tom had discussed how Grandfather had children. Tom says that Grandfather was Rick's biological Grandfather, so there must be a story behind that. Even though the book misses that one piece of information, it is still and excellent book that nobody will regret reading.

4 out of 5 stars A very good read   December 22, 2008
JohnnyCache (USA)
I have read in some of the reviews of his books that, at times, Tom Brown has a tendency to exaggerate. Personally I don't know if all the stories in this book are factual or not and I believe about 90% of what I've read in here.
However all the philosophy contained in this book is spot on and I agree with it 100%.
If you are interested in Native American Spirituality and philosophy on living free in Nature, the decadence of modern society and the Old Ways of Native Americans then this would make a very enjoyable read. If you are not interested in those things then I say to each his own.
Tom Brown is a wonderful writer and I am glad I bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars changed the way I look at the world   October 23, 2008
Porcelain Monkey (St. Louis - The Hill)
read this book when I was much younger. I cannot help but to refer back to the message and images given to me by Tom Brown from "Grandfather" every time I go out into nature. A great book to give a young person that will perhaps spark an interest in the natural world.
