Hathcart was a hero, as were most of the men and women who gave so much in Lyndon Johnson's fool's errand we remember as the Vietnam war. His reward? A pension of less than $700 a month and incredible physical and mental pain. Our politicos send men and women to war, given them medals, and we all bask in their heroic sacrifices, while they are relegated to the dusty alleys of lives that could have been.
