Product Description Andy Carpenter gains possession of an adorable Bernese puppy whose owner was brutally murdered. Few can rival Andy's affection for dogs, and he will do whatever it takes to insure that this little pup doesn't fall into the wrong hands. However, his playful new friend is valued by several people, many of whom are willing to resort to violence to get what they want. It will take more than Andy's usual courtroom theatrics to save this dog, including a little help from his beloved golden retriever, Tara. Andy soon discovers that anyone around him is in danger, including his long-time girlfriend Laurie, and he will have to muster all of his wits to save those he holds most dear.

So-o-o-o disappointed because...... March 17, 2010 Susan I have truly loved all prior Andy Carpenter tales (tails?)....However, I found much too much repetition (some understandably necessary for newcomers to the series) but also the novelty of the first three books has worn thin for me. Now it just feels as though the author is following the same outline for each story (all of it becoming rather mundane and tedious). I say all this with a broken heart but I need original stuff to make me happy.
Love the Tara angle in each book and she is a true heroine for many reasons. I do like Andy et al., but I'd like (and HOPE) the next book takes a much different turn so I may go back to my giggling (sometimes raucously) thru a David Rosenfelt book
and look forward to the next in the series.
Legal status for animals is an idea who's time is rght. March 10, 2010 M. Hughes (Winnebago, IL USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like the idea of a legal advocate for animal rights so I bought the book. It wasn't quite what I expected. Truthfully, I would have preferred a story with more dog and less lawyer.
The book is just a little short on plot and long on dialog. The author concentrates on witty banter between the lawyer, his sidekicks, and the lady love of his life. The banter gets a little thin after a few chapters and I wasn't really dazzled by the lawyerly maneuvering.
Very predictable ending. I probably won't rush out to buy the other books in the series.
It's Not Tolstoy, But Who Cares? February 25, 2010 N. Bilmes (Vernon, CT United States) High-brow snobs are never going to love books like this: there just aren't enough multisyllabic words or hidden messages to make this worthy in their eyes. However, those of us who read to be entertained are going to be thrilled with this installment in the Andy Carpenter legal thriller series. Andy is back to his wise-cracking ways, he song-talks with his accountant, bugs the judge, and solves a mystery that keep you entertained every step of the way.
Seventh Legal Triller in the Fun and Exciting Andy Carpenter Series February 1, 2010 William T. Mcgee (Springfield, IL USA) Like David Rosenfelt's other six mesmerizing Andy Carpenter legal thrillers he kept me on the edge of my chair blazing through this one sitting read of exciting twists and turns couple with his amazing humor.
Like the other books in this series, David Rosenfelt brings back the wealthy and witty dog loving defense attorney, Andy Carpenter; the love of his life, girlfriend from afar, Findlay, Wisconsin Chief of Police Laurie Collins; his best golden retriever in the world, Tara; his lazy cross-word champion of the world secretary, Edna; his hypochondriac law associate, Kevin Randall; Sam Willis, Andy's accountant and accomplished computer hacker extraordinaire; his fearsome bodyguard, Marcus Clark; Pete Stanton, a police officer who provides favors in exchange for expensive meals; his grumpy newspaper editor friend, Vince Sanders; and Willie Miller, former client, sometimes body guard and now business partner CEO of the Tara Foundation and his wife and co-worker, Sondra.
The story begins with Judge Hatchet appointing Andy with placing "Waggy," a Burmese mountain puppy, the sole male progeny of now deceased famous champion show dog, Bertrand. The dog's owner, multimillionaire Walter Timmerman, a Chemist and Microbiologist working on secret discoveries in DNA was murdered and his widow Diana and her step-son Steven both want custody of the dog.
Although an arrest has been made for that murder, Steven is arrested as the new suspect after his step-mother, Diana is murdered and overwhelming evidence points to his guilt. With him at the time of his arrest, Andy decides to defend Steven.
Not counting the "Waggy" duties, Carpenter's job is twofold. He needs to convince a jury that his client was framed while he finds the true killer/killers. During that struggle he encounters hit men, clandestine foreign agents, FBI investigators, shady operators, men of great wealth and power and a love triangle as the bodies mount and the plot thickens with unexpected twists and turns.
I am absolutely hooked on the Andy Carpenter series. David Rosenfelt has done a noteworthy job of developing the main characters and at providing vivid background that places the reader in modern day Patterson, New Jersey. I have read them all in rapid succession and hope the Rosenfelt continues producing these quick and fun reads.
Another Very Good Book By David Rosenfelt! January 20, 2010 bobbewig (New Jersey, USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've said it before and I'm saying it again now -- no matter what limitations David Rosenfelt might have in his life, the ability to tell a consistently good, suspenseful and humorous story isn't one of them. With New Tricks, his seventh book featuring Attorney Andy Carpenter, Rosenfelt continues to be one of the freshest voices among today's mystery writers. This stems from his ability to provide interesting plots, credible courtroom drama, lots of humor and well-developed major and minor characters. Andy Carpenter, the main character who is a wise-cracking suburban New Jersey defense attorney, is one that stays in your mind even after you finish the book and is one that I'm looking forward to 'hang out' with in his future legal adventures. Plus, his dog, Tara, is one I wish I had. In New Tricks, Carpenter's devotion to dogs and legal skills merge when he represents an adorable Bernese mountain puppy, whose owner was brutally murdered in a custody fight. I highly recommend New Tricks if you're in the mood for a fast-paced, easy read. However, you might want to first consider reading Open And Shut and First Degree and/or some of the other books in this series, which I think will further your appreciation of New Tricks.
