Product Description Andy Carpenter gains possession of an adorable Bernese puppy whose owner was brutally murdered. Few can rival Andy's affection for dogs, and he will do whatever it takes to insure that this little pup doesn't fall into the wrong hands. However, his playful new friend is valued by several people, many of whom are willing to resort to violence to get what they want. It will take more than Andy's usual courtroom theatrics to save this dog, including a little help from his beloved golden retriever, Tara. Andy soon discovers that anyone around him is in danger, including his long-time girlfriend Laurie, and he will have to muster all of his wits to save those he holds most dear.

The Best Andy Carpenter Tale in Awhile! November 12, 2009 Michael A. Newman (New Hyde Park, NY) This is a great tale that keeps you guessing until practically the last page. Andy must defend a client he knows for sure is innocent but cannot use any of the proof that his client is innocent because of the way it was obtained. Andy must summon all his witty, retort led courtroom acumen to take other tacks in winning the freedom of his client (Steven). Steven is accused of murdering his father and there is a ton of "circumstantial" evidence linking him to the crime and practically nothing to prove that he didn't do it.
Also, Steven's step-mother is killed and the culprit seems to also want a purebred litter of a champion, pup to also die. Everthing seems to point back to DNA experiments that Steven's father was working on. Such experiments seem to have aroused the interest of the FBI (the author has to always figure a way to get Cindy Spodek into his tales) and an international hitman.
It is up to Andy to get his client off, protect the dog and his own life. To do it he calls on his usual cast of characters (Laurie, Kevin, Sam, Pete and the indestructible Marcus).
The book goes at a fast pace and is hard to put down. Probably the best Andy Carpenter tale since his initial appearance!
Courtroom thriller with a unique wag of the tail November 4, 2009 Readers Favorite (Hawesville, KY USA) Attorney Andy Carpenter loves dogs and earned the nickname "Lawyer to the Dogs." His most recent client is Waggy, a Bernese mountain puppy. Waggy's master Walter Timmerman was murdered. Waggy is caught between Diana the widow and Steven her step son. Andy takes temporary custody of Waggy. Dianna is killed in a bomb blast.
Andy agrees to defend Steven when he is accused of Diana's murder. Tara (Andy's golden retriever) is the perfect role model playmate for young Waggy. After Andy's girl friend is shot while playing the with dogs, he realizes that the target was Waggy all along.
Waggy's life is at stake why? What does the dog know that has put him in danger?
This is the first book I've read by author David Rosenfelt. It won't be the last . The characters are exquisite. Andy and his canine friends make this book a fast, easy, and entertaining read. This book is filled with humor, action, and adventure. If you enjoy a courtroom thriller with a unique wage of the tail you'll love this book.
Lawyer to the Dogs November 3, 2009 Ted Feit (Long Beach, NY USA) This newest entry in the Andy Carpenter series starts out with Andy being called to a judge's chambers and assigned a client, which turns out to be a dog. But not just any dog. It is a potential champion show canine, son of perhaps the greatest show dog of all time. Custody of the dog is disputed between the widow of a murdered multi-millionaire and his son, who has no love for his step-mother. While Andy is retrieving the dog from the woman until he can decide who gets possession of the animal, the mansion explodes and the step-mother is killed.
Soon, the step-son is arrested for causing the explosion and death of his step-mother, and he retains Andy to defend him. Meanwhile, Andy's lover and former investigator is visiting, providing a love angle. When the case endangers her life, Andy unavoidably becomes distracted from his investigation. The plot revolves around trying to formulate a defense and developing all kinds of theories.
The Andy Carpenter series is consistently entertaining and always is built around a trial in which the dilettante attorney defends an innocent accused of some crime or other. Often, the trial tactics are intriguing, unusual, inventive or far out, as becomes Andy's irreverent personality. Unfortunately, that is not the case in this otherwise pleasurable novel. That said, the book is written with the accustomed smoothness and flippancy seen in former entries in the series which made them good reading and, despite the lack of exciting trial tactics, the novel is enjoyable, and is recommended.
Five Star might be over the top, but I love Andy Carpenter so much.. October 27, 2009 Melly (Dallas, TX USA) This book isn't the best in the Andy Carpenter series, but I love spending time with Andy. The wise cracking defense attorney always makes me smile and always has me staying up late to see how his latest case turns out. I'm not sure this is the book in the series to start with, because you should already love Andy and his fearless sidekick Tara before reading, but if you're into the series you'll not be disappointed.
Intelligence legal drama October 17, 2009 Reader Views (Austin, Texas) Reviewed by Victoria Gonzales for Reader Views (10/09)
This is a hilarious book. It is easy to see why the author, David Rosenfelt, is a well regarded author. He has a very unique writing style and it is a pleasure to read this book. You will laugh out loud each page. He perfectly creates each character and it is almost like you know them and are in the room with them. Andy Carpenter is a witty lawyer who has recently acquired the title of "Lawyer to the Dogs."
The story starts after a judge asks Andy to be a lawyer in a custody suit for a golden retriever. Things get complicated after one of the people seeking custody is murdered and the other person seeking custody is said to be the murderer. Andy has to represent the accused murderer in hopes that he will be able to get custody of the dog. There are many great supporting characters; the judge, Andy's friend, and other investigators are all funny additions to the story. Additionally, Andy has a girlfriend who has moved away and he has to win her back. It is not your typical mystery legal thriller; it is hilarious and thrilling at the same time.
There is a combination of action, adventure, romance, and humour in this great mystery, "New Tricks" by David Rosenfelt. Because it is told from a male perspective, it would likely appeal to a male reader, but overall I think it would appeal to anyone, I certainly enjoyed it and I am female. The best thing about this book is the humour, each character is hilarious. The author is so funny and the book is a definite must-read. It is so much better than the average mystery/thriller. After reading the book, I realized there were more books in the series, at least one of which involves another dog. I didn't even realize that this was the case because the characters were well developed in this book; it might as well have been the first in the series. But now, I have more great books to read! If the other books are as good as this one, then this is an excellent series.
