 The Divine Comedy November 14, 2009

I needn't review the merits of Dante's epic work for it is without question a landmark achievement in Western literature. And Robert Moore's review is an excellent argument as to why this translation merits serious consideration. What remains is to add how much I enjoyed revisiting this haunting journey that has captivated readers for many generations. If you haven't yet made the effort to discover Dante's Divine Comedy, this would be the volume with which to begin. Enjoy.
For an audio edition I recommend: The Divine Comedy: Inferno - Purgatory - Paradise (Naxos AudioBooks).

The book was thrilling but it builds a very slow bond with Dante through "The Inferno" so it is kind of boring in the beginning. Each chapter is about 2-3 pages long (leaving each realm swiftly). Book is still worth the money though!

M (Gnawing away at your reality)
I was interested in buying 'The Inferno', not knowing that it was part of a trilogy. I looked around here on Amazon.com and learned that it was part of a series and it was available in one book. I looked around at the various versions of the Divine Comedy, and this book was highly-rated and came with helpful reviews, so this was the one I selected. I was not at all disappointed. I don't know Italian, but the translation feels appropriate, and the notes are helpful. A definite must for any literary collection.

I bought this expecting a comedy. It isn't funny at all! The author should be sued for calling his book a "divine" comedy. It couldn't even be called a mediocre comedy. It's just boring old Italian stuff about God and the Bible and other stupid boring old people stuff like that. I mean, i guess the part in hell was kinda funny when the people were frozen and stuff but not really, even. The Oxford English Dictionary is way funnier and it's one of the worst books I've ever read. And I thought maybe it would have something about Dante's peak in it but there was nothing about volcanoes. What a misleading title! Don't buy this if you want to be entertained in any way.
I think they just called it that because they knew it would never sell any copies otherwise.

After receiving my copy of The Divine Comedy: Inferno; Purgatorio; Paradiso (Everyman's Library), I mentally prepared myself for a battle; as I have read numerous times that this piece of literature is very difficult to read. Indeed, it is not a light read, but this Everyman's edition of Allen Mandelbaum's translation with a glossary and sufficient endnotes, makes it an easy and enjoyable read.
All three parts (Inferno; Purgatorio; Paradiso) of the epic is in one well bounded book with a ribbon bookmarker. To add more value to this volume of the divine comedy is the great introduction by Eugenio Montale the many drawings through out its pages.
Very readable, thus recommended.
