| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review In Touched with Fire, Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatrist, turned a mirror on the creativity so often associated with mental illness. In this book she turns that mirror on herself. With breathtaking honesty she tells of her own manic depression, the bitter costs of her illness, and its paradoxical benefits: "There is a particular kind of pain, elation, loneliness and terror involved in this kind of madness.... It will never end, for madness carves its own reality." This is one of the best scientific autobiographies ever written, a combination of clarity, truth, and insight into human character. "We are all, as Byron put it, differently organized," Jamison writes. "We each move within the restraints of our temperament and live up only partially to its possibilities." Jamison's ability to live fully within her limitations is an inspiration to her fellow mortals, whatever our particular burdens may be. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Product Description The personal memoir of a manic depressive and an authority on the subject describes the onset of the illness during her teenage years and her determined journey through the realm of available treatments. Reprint. 125,000 first printing. NYT.

Excellent and provacative for those with bipolar February 15, 2010 Cyndi Dunn (KATY, TX, US) My psychiatrist recommended this the first time I was re-diagnosis-ed from severe depression to bipolar disorder, and I wanted to learn everything I could about this disorder. It was written by Kay Jamison and was her road-map through bipolar and how she led a successful life, despite he diagnosis. Most impressive is that she wrote the book back when bipolar disorder was a more of a negative stigma than it is today.
She continued to work in the medical field and had great accomplishments, and was very informative about sharing her personal battles, as well.
Well written and a MUST read for anyone who shares this diagnosis, as you can relate and she kept on pushing on.
A Better Understanding January 18, 2010 Cheryl W. Mcclellan (Concord, NC) The book was interesting and revealing. I got bogged down a couple of times with details that I could not relate to but this book really helped me see my daughter's issues through a new set of eyes, eyes of someone who truly experiences this same illness.
bipolar January 10, 2010 R. T. Gardner (DC) Excellent biography. It talks about the development of bipolar symptoms throughout a life and one woman's efforts to deal with/control it. Her most important point for me, is to make sure you have the network in place to confront you and get you treatment when the symptoms take over your life.
An Unquiet mind January 8, 2010 J. Rivera (PR) This book explains from a patient point of view the Bipolar Disorder. This patient is the one thtCongress goes to when thay need information about this disorder. The writter is an expert in the subject.
Insightful December 10, 2009 Rick Garcia "An Unquiet Mind" was recommended to me by a family member to give me some insight into the mind of someone struggling with bipolar disorder. It is not a clinical analysis, but instead the story of someone with the illness and the effect, both positive and negative, that it had on her life. Jamison's clinical background gives weight to her observations of her own behavior, often giving both sides (formal and informal) to the thoughts swirling in her mind. Colloquial in style, I highly recommend this especially to those struggling with bipolar disorder or to family members of those with bipolar or manic-depressive disorder.
