Amazon.com Review
Alexandra Day's modern classic Good Dog Carl has sold more than 200,000 copies, captivating countless readers with the lovable rottweiler Carl, endearing illustrations, and the tale's surprising silliness. The book begins with the mother saying, "Look after the baby, Carl. I'll be back shortly." Let the adventure begin! Carl looks out the window to make sure Mom is gone. Once the coast is clear, the baby crawls out of the crib and onto Carl's back. First stop? Mom's bed. Second stop? The top of the dresser where powder puffs are sported as hats. The infant--now in Carl's capable paws--slides down the laundry chute, swims in the fish tank, dances, raids the refrigerator, and makes a huge mess. Carl dutifully bathes the baby, cleans up the chaos, puts his charge back in the crib, and plays it cool when Mom comes home. "Good dog, Carl!" she says upon her return. A sweet, subtly absurd picture book that jubilantly illustrates the old adage, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." (Picture book)

Product Description
The favorite original story about Carl the responsible rottweiler is presented in a sturdy board book edition and follows the adventures shared by the babysitting dog and his infant mistress.

5 out of 5 stars Good Dog Carle   October 7, 2009
A. Price (North Aurora, IL)
My son loved the Carl books. We read them from the time he was an infant until about 2nd grade. The pictures are so detailed and wonderful. You frequently find something new the next time you read it. One example was the Christmas book, I didn't see Santa's boots going up the chimney until a few years after purchasing. I used to point out things in the pictures and make up a story for the books, although that got my husband in trouble. He would fly through books to get my son to bed. My son used to tell him he wasn't reading all the words. These books taught my husband to slow down and and enjoy the time with his son. Reading a few books to your child in his bed is the best way to calm them down and put them to sleep. When my son was a toddler, the Carl books would always be the ones he picked. He's 18 now and I just asked him what his favorites were, to buy for a pregnant friend. Years later he could list the books and remembered the stories. His favorites were Good Dog Carl, Carl"s Masquerade and Carl's Christmas. I like the hard covered books because they include the complete pictures unlike the newer board books. Ours are a little battered but still in good condition, waiting to be read to grandchildren. These books are truly a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Great funny gift for parents, or parents to be, with a dog!   August 27, 2009
Amjra (Arlington Heights, IL United States)
We love this book, and we are two adults! This is a sweet picture book that tells the story of Carl, and what he does while babysitting. If you have a dog, especially a rottweiler, you will find this book quite amusing. It would be a great funny gift for parents-to-be who have a rottweiler, or a large dog for that matter. Owners of large dogs know that they act in their own special funny way, especially when you aren't around.

The book is entirely in lovely paintings and without many words. The format should allow for many hours of creative story dialogue between parent and child. However, precious baby won't be able to enjoy it until s/he reaches a verbal toddler stage. Can't wait to hear the story that our little one tells us when "reading" this book.

5 out of 5 stars This wonderful book   August 12, 2009
Happy Auntie (Asheville, NC)
I was introduced to Carl when my son brought him home from a book fair when he was in the 2nd grade, around 1992. This year or family was blessed with a late addition - my brother's long awaited son. This was the first book I bought for the new baby and at 5 months of age my nephew just loves it, as do my brother and sister-in-law. They have had so much fun reading Carl to the baby and are looking forward to the day when baby will tell them the story with his own twist. Who says you need word to read!!

1 out of 5 stars Great if you're not a toddler   July 15, 2009

Love the art & the concept, and, yes, it's very funny. But I would NOT recommend the book for the 1 year old to 3 year old crowd that the board book targets. Or anyone with a sibling that age. I have pretty tame girls, but still my 18 month old, if she so much as saw the picture, would immediately copy it. My three year old, in a silly moment, would try to be the family pet and get the 18 month old to climb on her back from the crib.

Toddlers and preschool kids don't know any better, don't necessarily see it as silly, and are excellent imitators. This should not be a board book, I think that is misleading. Great art & concept, cute story too if you are old enough to separate silly from real.

This series of books is fantastic. Everyone with small children should have them, and I know adults who enjoy them too!
