good book for first time breeders May 10, 2009 Stephanie D. Whitley (Midland, Texas) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book after I found out my Siberian husky was pregnant. It helped me understand my dog's actions and how to assist her before, during, and after birth. I was very pleased that this book used easy terms that even I could understand. Great book for a first time breeder or a reference for the experienced breeder.
The complete book of dog breeding May 7, 2009 Nelson C. Begeot Jr. (NE Ohio) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very detailed book but easy for the beginning breeder to understand. Information is clear and was written with fore thought in mind. Like the Boy Scout motto "Be prepared". This book will get you there
Best Dog Breeding Book Ever January 1, 2009 K. Caprio (Italy) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read tons of dog breeding books to help me in preparing for my first time breeding my Golden Retrievers. I wanted to be informed and aware of everything before the actual mating and whelping of my first litter. This book helped me prepare beyond all others. Besides the wealth of knowledge, the writing is "user friendly" and full of facts. Lots of books are snooty and full of gigantic words and info that the common layperson, breeder and even dog owner does not need to know. This book is not one of them...this book is full of easy to understand and grasp veterinarian knowledge aimed at the regular purebred dog owner who is planning on becoming a great breeder.
This book hits all aspects of dog breeding except genetics which takes a whole book and more in itself. The author speaks of the dam and sires nutrition, breeding, aftercare, whelping and everything else in between.
Since this was my first time mating my Goldens, I referred to this book even while they were in the middle of their "tie" to reassure myself and them that I was doing the right thing.
If you are considering breeding or are already a breeder, this is a fantastic book that I will recommend to anyone who asks. Worth every penny!
Dog breeding info October 6, 2008 Lourdes Bobadilla (Fremont, CA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great book especially for novices! It gave you enough information to prepare for the birth, understand and know what to anticipate. We had 2 books handy while our chi gave birth to 6 puppies! Puppy birth is very similar to human birth in alot of ways. So, if you've been through child birth whether it's yourself or a loved one, the main thing is to remain calm and be there for your dog. They will appreciate you for it!
birthin' puppies April 7, 2008 Nooker-Doo little Roo 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was of great help, particularly when our pups began to dehydrate after birth. There were only 2 things it did not prepare us for, having smaller than normal litters and the mother's nervous behavior affecting her care of such a small litter. According to the emergency vet on holiday call, there are breed specific behaviors which play into the mother's care and can interfere. My only wish was that I could have found a book more specific to my breed. As a general instruction manual, it was of great help. The two little pups are dear and are doing well now, 2 weeks later.
