When You're In Tough Times, Shallow May Be All You Can Handle November 7, 2009 DeputyHeadmistress 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Generally I find Lucado's books shallow and repetitive, and this small devotional style book- the sort that many people keep in their bathrooms, is about the same. However, when you actually are in the midst of really tough times, sometimes you aren't able to think deep thoughts or focus long enough to read more than a few sentences. Though I favor the Psalms for the really tough times, I can see that this book could serve a need when you are too stressed to concentrate very deeply.
Comfort Food for the Soul October 31, 2009 Christopher Hubbs (Iowa) When you're hungry, sometimes you want something fancy, exotic, or robust. Other times, though, you're just ready for comfort food. Simple, nourishing, and refreshing to the soul as well as the body. If we take that metaphor over to the world of books, at times you need a thick theology book or an explanation of some new philosophy, but at other times you need a book like Max Lucado's For These Tough Times. In Lucado's short volume, he doesn't bring anything really deep or new, but brings rather a comforting message to those going through, well, hard times.
Tough Times is a small, short book - easily readable inside of an hour, but full of good reminders to the heavy heart - that God loves us, that He is in control, that we can rest in Him, that justice will, in the end, win out, and that we can be quiet and pray and look to God in our troubles. I'd recommend it to read, keep on your shelf, and then pass along to a friend when the opportunity arises. These are reminders that we can all use from time to time.
Excellent Gift Book August 12, 2009 Shirley McClay (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) For The Tough Times by Max Lucado deals with the struggle of watching life fall apart around you and all the questions and frustrations that boil out. "God is still in His temple. He is still on His throne. And He's still in control." Max helps point out the answers through Scripture and his awesome stories that keep me turning page after page.
It's short, sweet and to the point. It would be a powerful full length book but as a gift book it really does well. It covers the topics enough to wet the interest and stir the waters of someone's heart to turn to God in those hurting times.
It's a great book to set on your bedside stand to read in snippets or to give to a struggling friend with a basket of goodies, or even as a secret friend gift.
Good message, but choppy book. June 12, 2009 Jennifer Hodgkiss (Lampasas, Tx) While Max Lucado is one of my favorite children's christian book writers I have to say that this was not my favorite adult book. Max Lucado does do an excellent job of getting the point across with compassion, humor and warmth, but the book is rather choppy as if it has been cut and paste together. While it was an easy read (it was a rather small book) it still felt like it was put together with an after-thought.
One thing was good... the message was clear... just when you think your life is out of control... God is in control.
A Giftbook of Hope May 14, 2009 Jean Wise (edon, ohio United States) For the Tough Times by Max Lucado is a simple gift book that may give someone going through a difficult period some hope.
The basic premise is God is still with you and you can draw near him in prayer. Lucado uses wonderful Biblical passages to support God's love and that can be used in prayer. For example, Romans 8:31 - God is with us.
This book's simplicity makes for an easy read and a tender gift for someone who is hurting. The difficulty with this book is also its simplicty with its quick easy answers.
I have really enjoyed Max Lucado's books in the past, devouring and memorizing some of his "Maxisms". This book felt like it was cut and pasted together quickly from leftover material, so I was disappointed.
