Product Description "Living With Blind Dogs," now in its second edition, is the only published resource book on this topic. It embodies helpful hints from hundreds of blind-dog owners, as well as years of ophthalmic nursing, veterinary, and dog training experiences. Both the veterinary community and dog owners alike continue to praise this text, in which Levin successfully answers the common question: "What do I do now?" This revised edition contains all the topics covered in the first edition, such as: Dealing with feelings of loss and grief, how dogs react to blindness, conditions that cause blindness and how they progress, genetics, pack issues, training concepts, new skills, helpful hints to negotiate the house, yard, and community, toys, games, and suppliers/resources. This revised edition also includes numerous new sections and chapters: Dogs both blind and deaf, dogs blind from birth, white canes and other devices, circling behaviors, changes in barking patterns, dealing with cats, giving eye drops, traveling and camping with a blind dog, adding another dog to the pack, dry eye syndrome, VKH, and new findings on PRA and SARD.

Better late than never November 15, 2009 Best Boston's Mom On October 14th I took my beloved 14-year-old Boston Terrier to the eye speciaist because he had started bumping into walls. He'd had cataract surgery on one eye the year before and the second eye had ruptured a month before from cysts. They held no hope for better sight and I had heard of this book, so that evening I found it on the net thru Amazon and ordered it with express delivery. It came Saturday morning, but on Friday I had to put my angel down because in his blindness, he had miscalculated a jump, hurt his back, and was suffering. But when the book came, I accepted it and started reading it. I found a number of suggestions I would never have thought of. I will be getting another dog after the New Year, and who knows what the future will bring? I think this book is a good investment for any dog owner.
Great book to help with your dog's blindness October 23, 2009 Lindajp6 (Missouri, USA) My eleven year old dachshund has recently lost her sight(dx of PRA) and I saw this book in the eye vet doctor's office. I purchased this book, on Amazon, to get further information on how to deal and help my doxie with her blindness. This book has a lot of information and is very helpful. I think it would be a good handbook for vets to give to owners when their dog has loss of sight, especially opthamologist vets. I really wish it could be included with the visit for dx of blindness since it is very costly to see the eye doctor for evaluation of blindness. Our visit and test was about 550 dollars and I feel a good handbook like this one should be included with the visit for initial blindness. Many good tips and we are grateful for this book to help us with our doxie.
I would recommend this book to all that are dealing with blindness of a dog. I am sad to say that I have had people ask me if I was going to put my dog "down" due to her blindness. Dogs have so much more life to live with their disability, in fact, as my vet and the book indicated, dogs adapt to blindness better than people. My vet said it is harder on the owners than the dog..this I agree with and we are dealing with it after much sadness at first. My dog has had depression and not her self during this initial period of adjustment. Thank you to the author for such a good handbook.
Hope for my dog! October 19, 2009 Beverly C My dog was recently diagnosed with SARD. This book has a section on this disease for treatment. I have since been in contact with the author and our local vet to set up testing and treatment. Her overall health is improving, and she has a chance to recover some of her sight....if only I had ordered this book sooner! It has been a great resource to help give my dog a chance for a healthy life. Buy it, the author is very knowledgeable!
Very Useful October 2, 2009 B. A. Cawley (Boston MA) My basset went blind 5 years ago from canine glaucoma and it just devastated me. This book gave us great ideas and training tips and now we have a happy, full, and outgoing life. We go EVERYWHERE.
There's a lot of living to do for a blind dog and with the right training it'll be a lot easier to navigate this big world.
This book helped definitely helped.
Blind Dog September 27, 2009 S. M. Higgins (Norton, MA) My dog was recently diagnosed with SARDS, and I bought this book on the recommendation of the specialty vet who diagnosed her. The only useful parts of the book are the sections on household tips to make sure that your dog is safe, and some of the training suggestions.
