Tricks of the Trade December 16, 2009 Susan M. Scott (Australia) This book goes hand in hand with the Puppy Puzzle DVD. The straight forward illustrations clearly demonstrate the underlying structure beneath the exterior of the puppy, and add to Pat Hastings clear explanations of correct and incorrect conformation. There is also additional information relevant to diet and health. A most excellent publication.
Great book for novice dog showers looking for extra helpful hints. February 2, 2009 Shane Rushing (Portland, OR) I purchased this book because I have heard nothing but wonderful things about Pat Hastings - she is widely respected in the dog world. Being a novice in the dog show world myself (on and off in the show ring for a little over three years), this book gave me great insight on structural issues within dogs, tips on good dog health, and a bunch of random helpful hints for show dogs.
While this was not the best book I have read on this topic - it is an easy read filled with helpful information. I trust everything that Pat Hastings says and will be re-reading this book in the near future.
If you don't know anything about dog shows, and are a true beginner, I'd look elsewhere.
My least favorite so far. December 27, 2008 hummerfriend (Sacramento, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the third book I have purchased in pursuit of knowledge on showing my dog. It is by far at the bottom of the stack insofar as it contains virtually nothing on how to show or handle a dog in the ring. I'm not entirely sure what the author was shooting for, but what she ended up with is a bullet point style Cliff Notes version of "everything you ever wanted to know about structure but were afraid to ask." Perhaps the book's description isn't clear enough, but this is certainly not a book on how to show your dog. It is a basic introduction to the author's method of assessing structure in puppies (but contains virtually nothing on temperament assessment, genetic health screening, etc.)....if that's what I had been looking for I might be more impressed. Even so, my dog would not have passed her "8 week structure test" but coalesced into a fabulously strong specimen so I'm a little leery of her method being your only determining factor when assessing a litter.....truth is even the most experienced show breeder is still only guessing what a puppy will grow up to be. When I am ready to start reading on puppy evaluation, however, I will certainly look for a book with more meat in it--this really is just a light introduction.
All in all I'm glad I got this book as a gift. If you want to part with a hard earned $20 and really learn something about how to show your dog look into Peter Green's "New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling" and George Alston's "The Winning Edge". Keeping in mind that with any book on the topic, you need to take any statements made in the "absolute" vein with a grain of salt. I gave three stars because there were two or three tidbits that I will use in my own show training program. Bottom line is I try to take something away from anything I read...but while the other two books I mentioned are dog-eared and highlighted to oblivion (and referred to weekly) this one is going to find itself lost on the shelf once I've integrated the couple of odd tips I picked up.
If you are seeking an introduction into structure assessment in puppies you will probably like this book....in that sense I can see where it would be useful. If your looking for help with your prep and presentation in the ring, look elsewhere.
A Must have for someone interested in gaining more knowledge! December 14, 2008 Rottie dawg (CA usa) I must say that I am very much impressed by this book and recommend it for everyone. I have found these reviews to be very helpful and always read them before deciding to purchased a book (especially a pricey one). This book is the equivalent to the DVD "Puppy Puzzle", I purchased both and found the book was a lot easier for me to absorb. Another book that is great is also by this author called "Puppy Development". I recommend this book to new breeders and people who want to get into showing, it has lots of useful information and it is very, very easy to read!
Best book I have read recently. October 21, 2008 MrSilkYork (Albuquerque, New Mexico United States) The advertisements on most books look better than what you recieve when you read the book. Not so on this one! I've been breeding for the show ring for over 10 years, and this book really gave me some new insites and ways to simplify, and improve how I train and groom for showing. Best book I have bought lately. I even bought some extras to give to my Mentor and some other friends.
