A must read for new or seasoned teachers November 9, 2009 Bonnie E. Callahan This is a gold mine of information on my weakest teaching asset--classroom management. It is worth every penny!!
An excellent resource for those keen to enter the teaching profession, novice teachers and practicing educators November 6, 2009 z hayes (plano, texas) I used to to teach high school English and History in Singapore for eight years, and I am now settled in the US, and working towards a masters (and eventually a PhD) in education. I was recommended this book in one of my graduate classes, and am very impressed by it. In fact, I wish that I had this book when I was a beginning teacher 13 years ago. "The First Days of School" is a highly organized educational resource that takes educators (both novice and experienced) step-by-step through the skills and strategies that teachers can use to become more professional in their teaching and learning. It covers all the basics such as the skills needed to succeed in one's first year of teaching, i.e. having positive expectations for student success, being an efficient classroom manager, designing effective lesson plans and implementing them successfully in the classroom, and finally being a lifelong learner.
This edition of the book also comes with a DVD "The First Days of School" which features Chelonnda Seroyer, voted "Teacher-of-the-year" at her school. Ms. Seroyer used "The First Days of School" to come up with effective procedures that she could use in her classroom to attain positive learning outcomes, and shares these procedures in the DVD.
A handy and practical resource, I'd recommend this to all novice and experienced teachers.
The First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher October 13, 2009 J. McFarland (Kentucky) I am currently a college student with a major in mathematics which I plan to use to teach mathematics at the secondary level. This book was recommended to me by a professor in one of my teaching methods courses. This book offers insight and tips on a wide variety of topics including classroom management, how to create effective assignments and assessments, and how to be a successful professional. This book also includes numerous outside resources that are beneficial for first year teachers, as well as veteran teachers. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the teaching profession, just beginning their teaching career, as well as those who are experienced educators.
The first days of school September 27, 2009 Miss Smith (arizona, usa) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anyone who majors in education wants to be an effective teacher. This book will definately teach you how to do that. It will annoy you, may you laugh and cry but in the end it will teach you. If you aren't effective after reading this book and implementing the information, then you might want to consider a different profession. Remember, an effective teacher can bring a remedial student AHEAD one year or push them BACK three years.
