Product Description
When dogs growl at other dogs, lunge at people, and bark at everything it's often mislabeled as "aggression." But most aggression is fear-based and should be treated as such. The appropriate term for this constellation of behaviors is "reactivity."

This book helps the trainer and dedicated dog owner to understand the reactive dog and help him change for the better. The process is not an easy one, but once the changes begin to take shape, owners become so encouraged that the rest of the process suddenly becomes easy!

All training methods and classroom techniques are based on fun and on the development of a working relationship with your dog. 149 pages and 68 photographs and graphics to help you recognize and solve problems.

This revised ediition, updated in April 2009, includes many new pictures and lots of new information.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource with a concrete training progrm   October 9, 2009
DeNae Leverentz (Brooklyn Park, MN USA)
We just adopted a scaredy dog. Our past experience has been in coping with overly dominant beagles, so we're at a bit of a loss with our scaredy beagle. We've consult a local trainer, who gave us some good ideas and recommended this books.

What I appreciate most about Scaredy Dog is that it moves beyond explaining that my dog is scared. Ali Brown provides very clear advice and exercises to do with your dog. I do wish that the training program had been more clearly laid out. On the other hand, this gave me the freedom to use the various exercises to create a training program that addresses my dog's needs.

I highly recommend this book. I feel like I have goal and a way to get there now.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative   April 4, 2009

I have had dogs for over 49 years and have taken several obedience classes. I found this book to be extremely informative and was helpful in preparing for my "CGC (Canine Good Citizenship) test. My dog was distracted during the test and not interested in doing a very basic command. I used one of the techniques I had learned and practiced earlier in the day with my dog and it worked! I was able to immediately obtain her attention, the evaluator was quit impressed how I was able to change the situation and it helped me pass the test. That alone, was worth the price of the book for me. I strongly recommend this book for all dog owners.

1 out of 5 stars Too permissive   April 2, 2009

I got this book to add to my training library on the advice of a friend. I have been training dogs successfully for decades and I am always interested in keeping my skills current. After reading this book, it went into the dumpster. Following this advice will in a good number of dogs, produce a dog that is dangerously aggressive because the dog has learned that there will be zero consequences for its behavior. I give this book one star even though it deserves none just so I can write a review. And sure enough, if you go to Ms. Brown's website, you will find that she has a fear aggressive dog that she has been unable to rehabilitate with her own methods - in fact she has made the dog worse. That should raise a huge red flag in anyone.

I recommend Patricia McConnell's work instead. You will be much happier.

Excellent, very specific & usable plans of action for ANY reactive problem with your dog. All about positive reinforcement. A great resource to keep on hand for anyone with a dog who is reactive to certain situations. Ideas put into action and they work! Read and re-read.
