Product Description
There is nothing lonelier than a cat who has been loved, at least for a while, and then abandoned on the side of the road. A calico cat, about to have kittens, hears the lonely howl of a chained-up hound deep in the backwaters of the bayou. She dares to find him in the forest, and the hound dares to befriend this cat, this feline, this creature he is supposed to hate. They are an unlikely pair, about to become an unlikely family. Ranger urges the cat to hide underneath the porch, to raise her kittens there because Gar-Face, the man living inside the house, will surely use them as alligator bait should he find them. But they are safe in the Underneath...as long as they stay in the Underneath. Kittens, however, are notoriously curious creatures. And one kitten's one moment of curiosity sets off a chain of events that is astonishing, remarkable, and enormous in its meaning. For everyone who loves Sounder, Shiloh, and The Yearling, for everyone who loves the haunting beauty of writers such as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Flannery O'Connor, and Carson McCullers, Kathi Appelt spins a harrowing yet keenly sweet tale about the power of love -- and its opposite, hate -- the fragility of happiness and the importance of making good on your promises.

I love The Underneath! November 19, 2009 Ang * ) (VA) This was a very enjoyable book--and I am an adult. I loved the writing, the animal characters, the story. Of course some things made me cry, but I cared about what happened to the characters.
Beautiful October 8, 2009 Trish (Landstuhl, Germany) I loved this book. I can't praise it anymore than it's already been praised and am confused by those few readers who disliked it. The writing is beautiful. My children are 24 & 27 so I won't be reading it to them, but if I had grandchildren, I'd certainly read it to them. Yes, the story is sad and contains ugly elements, but life isn't a happily-ever-after fairytale and I think it does a disservice to children to keep them from exposure to anything but fairy-princess stories and happy little puppy stories. You don't have to bang them over the head screaming that life is hard, but they are so much stronger and resilient than people give them credit for and there are some wonderful lessons to be learned from this story.
Bringing the Underneath into the light September 3, 2009 VW Smith (Eastern Idaho USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Kathi Appelt's writing style is gorgeous. She weaves a masterfully beautiful but dark tale. This is not a story for the very young or naive. Bad things happen, often. The ending is peaceful and what you could call happy. The violence is purposeful but could be disturbing to sensitive souls. She expertly turns from viewing one character to another with finesse and cliff hanging suspense. A must read for those old enough to handle it.
The Book That I Have Been Searching For June 30, 2009 Missus Bee As a teacher who loved and cherished books as a child, I am always searching for that "perfect" book to share with my students- one that will bring them the comfort or joy or wonder that I experienced when I could not wait to turn the pages of the next one. With The Underneath I finally found it! I have decided that I will share the book as a read-aloud in the fall, because it is the perfect book with which to launch a year of loving books and learning about what makes great writing. Thank you, Kathi Appelt for your beautiful gift!
The Underneath June 10, 2009 Joan Issari (Los Angeles, CA USA) The book is written with simplicity and directness that belie the deep emotions it arouses. A story of love and loss and redemption, it renders a cat, two kittens and a dog endearing and unforgetable. The one human in the story is incredibly repulsive, yet one understands why he is so, without being able to forgive him. A book not to be forgotten.
