Information from a Collector of Information October 12, 2009 Hapkido Man 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although the writer seems like a very nice guy with a good sense of humor, he seemingly only possesses the ability to point you in the correct direction for getting vegan information--not providing his own.
Based largely on his own journey this book lacks any real scientific, clinical or medical expertise and is largely anecdotal.
Additionally, the kindle formatting is awful! Page numbers appear randomly in the middle of paragraphs and graphics (including the cover) do not show at all.
Like having a vegan big brother August 8, 2009 Suasoria918 (Los Angeles, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Like a vegan big brother, Erik Marcus guides any new vegan (or nearly vegan) with sensible and honest how-to advice - and only the occasional noogie. Marcus gives readers the tried and true, including shopping advice, basic nutrition, what to cook, dining out, and explaining your ethics to family and spouses.
It's written in a casual style so it's accessible and intentionally nonconfrontational; if you're looking for an ideology-laden book that helps justify your choices to someone else, keep looking. Meat-eaters will find little to offend them in this book, which is mercifully light on the grisly details of animal suffering (plenty of other books and films accomplish this well).
I do have some minor quibbles. Some of his advice verges on simplistic - for example, travel and dining out can be more of a challenge than he acknowledges. His suggestions for activism are also somewhat simplistic. Unfortunately there is too little discussion of avoiding animal products in clothing, which is a valid concern for new vegans, nor does he mention avoiding animal entertainment like circuses or sea life theme parks. As above, there are other books and films where these issues are addressed fully, but it would have been nice to see some more attention paid here and possibly some resources.
Nonetheless, it's hard to imagine a better jumping-off point for someone interested in investing themselves more deeply in a vegan lifestyle.
User friendly and fun June 26, 2009 Sarah G. (The beautiful Hudson Valley) This book covers all things vegan--cooking tips, travel, social situations, and many etceteras--without being preachy and strident. Practical yet readable, I highly recommend it as a companion to a book like Becoming Vegan, which focuses mainly on nutrition. Kudos to Erik for creating a straightforward guide that helps make going vegan not only do-able but fun!
This Should Be Called "Vegan Bible" June 10, 2009 J. Lewis (St. Louis) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the perfect book for anyone who is considering a vegan lifestyle or has someone close to them who is a vegan. Erik Marcus does a fantastic job of going through the basics of veganism, but he also touches on a wide variety of topics that concern potential vegans including nutrition, hidden animal products in food, transitioning foods out, and, more importantly, transitioning foods into your diet. He manages to do all of this without coming across as condescending or finger wagging and without turning the book into a cookbook. This is a fantastic book and would be at home on any vegan's bookshelf.
Always a Pleasure May 29, 2009 Nikki (Redmond, OR United States) Erik Marcus' guide to being vegan is a matter-of-fact, helpful approach for us everyday, run of the mill, vegans next door. Guides like "Vegan Freak" are amusing, but the tone can be a turn-off for anyone not into the punk scene. I appreciate Marcus' care for the reader's personal health and step-by-step approach to making a smooth transition. For those who are already vegan it's a practical refresher on nutrition, smart activism; including good ideas for quickie stir-fries, sandwiches and smoothies with a bonus recipe for cashew cheese in the appendix. I also found a lot of online resources I wasn't aware of like barnivore.com and restaurant reviews through yelp.
When I want well-researched, good-humored, intelligent vegan information I turn to Erik Marcus.
