5 out of 5 stars Life saver during pregancy as well as during labor   October 29, 2009
stmarch (St. Paul, MN United States)
I used this book during the 2nd half of a 2nd pregnancy to prepare for labor. The exercise routine the author lays out really helped me alleviate a lot of the aches and discomfort that come along with pregnancy. And they also helped me manage through labor and delivery without drugs. I had tried Mind over Labor during my first pregnancy but am terrible at imagery-type meditation and could not cope through real contractions. The physical, motion-based responses to contractions laid out here were unbelievably effective for me.

Even if you're planning to manage your pain with drugs, this book is worth it just for the prenatal exercises. It's easy to read, interesting, and not too preachy.

5 out of 5 stars It works!   May 7, 2009
Bella (Florida)
I wanted to write my review on this book after the birth of my daughter. The techniques in the book actually work! I was given too much pain meds with my first birth, so I really wanted to attempt a natural birth the second go around. I used the techniques in this book, and had a wonderful birthing experience. It is a good read, even if you just need help getting to the point where you can get pain meds.

3 out of 5 stars Great natural birth pep talk, but exercises were dumb   April 30, 2009

I was not impressed with the exercises in this book, as they seemed to be things that anyone who exercises and stretches already does.

What I found most helpful about this book was its support of the idea that women are made to give birth and do not need drugs to cope. It also had a great explanation of why laying on your back is not the best way to labor and a great sort-of blow-by-blow of what labor feels like mentally and physically.

Not everyone wants unmedicated labor, but if you do, this book might help calm your fears about it. (yes, the photos are totally out of date, but labor isn't really different if your hairstyle is out of the 1970s or 2000s, so who cares?)

I know every time I read through sections of this book I finished feeling confident that I was ready for natural labor, actually excited for it, and no longer scared.

I don't know that I used many of the positions shown in the book during labor, I really did seem to know instinctively what to do and just listened to my body. But during my pregnancy I felt calmer knowing that I had this as a reference if I needed it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource   November 20, 2008
JBean (OR, USA)
For those women who are interested in learning about birthing approaches that allow for freedom of movement during the birthing process, this book is a great resource. It begins with an explanation of why an active birth can be advantageous without being too hard core. It then walks you through a series of yoga poses that help strengthen and ready the body for labor. In the next portion of the book, it walks the reader through the birthing process, gives guidance regarding certain situation that arises, and gives you the pros and cons of various alternatives. My birth went nothing as expected. I wanted to have a natural birth and ended up having anything but. HOWEVER, this book gave me a thorough understanding of the stages of birth and the yoga prepared my body so that I remained strong during my entire 36 hr. labor and my recovery was speedy. Yes, the pictures are a bit antiquated, but the information in the book is great.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful   October 24, 2008
Wildhairwoman (Roseburg, OR United States)
I found this book very helpful. I was able to have a completely "natural" birth with my daughter 2 years ago and I think this book helped me achieve it. I read it first when I was about 5 months along and then reread it about 2 weeks before I had her. I even took it to the hospital with me. After the birth of my daughter (my doctor said he had never seen anything like that), my doctor asked if he could have the book to read. He was very inspired by it. Since that time I have bought about 5 copies and given them to friends and family members that were pregnant. They were also able to go "all natural" and loved the book. I was getting ready to order another one and thought I should write up my success story.
