Product Description
Every year, some two million parents in the U.S. suffer the death of a son or daughter. The unnatural sequence of the child's preceding the parent in death creates a wrenching loss and overwhelming emotional and spiritual disorientation. Most of these bereaved parents find relief from their isolation only in the company of others like themselves. The Grieving Garden offers the support, understanding, and ultimately comfort and hope, from those who have shed the same tears over the death of a child. The Grieving Garden is a ground-breaking book that invites bereaved parents into personal conversations with a diverse group of fathers and mothers who share the same loss. The text is free of distracting and heavy-handed editorializing, expert opinion, or unwanted advice. Instead, readers are welcomed into a community of common understanding one they may enter at will, at their own pace, for reassurance and hope.

Maybe I'm Just Not Ready November 1, 2009 C. M. Graniero (Florida) My 35 year old daughter died 14 months ago. She was my true soul mate, my best friend, and my reason for living. I have read so many books of this type and still find no comfort in any of them. I do believe this was a well thought-out book, different than the rest, with personal interviews of couples in various stages of grief. I have to emphasize the word "couples" because I am not a "couple" but a single, divorced Mother who has been dealing with Leukemia and all its treatments since my daughter was 5 years old. As I find my situation is different than most, it is hard to relate to comments from people who are grieving the loss of a child where there is so much support from family, friends, clergy, and others. Resources that are not there for me. And maybe I am looking to a book to ease my mind, knowing others feel the way I do. Maybe it is just not the right time, or the right resource to find any comfort. Many reviewers have not experienced such a loss, but use this book as a guideline to learn and understand what their friend(s) are going through. I applaud their compassion and their search for a way to help, when it is so much easier to just walk away from life's pain and suffering. The world needs a lot more people like you. I thank you for the help you are giving to others.
Excellent book June 4, 2009 KAL (Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have recommended this book to a friend at a Compassionate Friends meeting and she has the same view on this book. I plan to read it again in the near future. Having read about other parents that have lost a child made me realize that there are people who understand the pain. I cannot say enough about this book, I wish there were more written like it.
My own personal grief support group March 7, 2009 Chris Harder (Roseville, CA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Following the death of my youngest son in 2006, I began reading books about grief and loss. Two years later, I read "The Grieving Garden". It became my own personal grief support group. It was wonderful because I found that I could identify with almost every parent who contributed from their own experience with losing a child. It also gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of the other moms in our local grief support group because their grief experience is different than mine. I have given "The Grieving Garden" to other bereaved moms to help them in their journey of grief. At Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel (Rocklin, California), we include this book in our recommended reading list. Our entire list of books can be found at www.HeritageOaksMC.com on the Resources page. In my opinion, this is definitely a 5-star book!
A much needed book to help deal with loss of a child October 14, 2008 M. L. Lin (Palo Alto, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When one of my best friends tragically lost her teenage daughter I was at a total loss as to how to support and help her in her grief. I wish I had had this resource to give me guidance. It is a jewel for those who need it, compassionately and beautifully written.
Coping with the loss of a child August 19, 2008 Dan Melick (Palo Alto, CA, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Grieving Garden is not only for those who have suffered the loss of a child, but also for the family and friends of grieving parents. The many contributors present their search for meaning, feelings and experiences during their grieving, and their quests to come to terms with, and live with their losses. Being long-time friends with one of the book's contributing families, my wife and I felt and saw their pain, but also felt our efforts of support and comfort fell short of what was needed. The Grieving Garden is an excellent and insightful book which deals with all aspects of the grieving process and it would have been very helpful to us if it had been available at that time.
