5 out of 5 stars How to understand dog language: a pictorial guide   November 1, 2009
O. Fischer (Atlanta, GA)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

So many people are unaware of how rich dog's language is. An estimated 80% of human communication is non-verbal, yet it seems that the average dog is much better at reading people than the average person is at reading a dog's body language.

I've met many long-time dog owners who are unaware of much of the information in this book. This book is good for current dog owners, new dog owners, and also for anyone who is fearful of dogs. I wish it were in every library and in book stores everywhere. This information needs to become common knowledge!

5 out of 5 stars Great information for household of multiple dogs.   October 22, 2009
R. Zhang (Redwood City,, ca USA)
The Author is clearly very knowledge and has great information that we all need as dog lovers. If you have multiple dogs in the house, you need this book to understand the relationship and dynamics among them. what is the polite behavior for a dog? why do dogs like to play? What does play mean to dogs? Why can simple play session escalate to predatory aggression? Each dog just like human has his or her own personality and how that personality comes out in a group situation. The quality of the pictures are not the best by far. Also, I enjoy the writing style of some of the other authors, like Patricia McConnell lot more than that of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for all Dog owners and lovers   July 3, 2009
Cynthia L. Rosa
This book is a must have for all serious dog lovers and multiple dog/pet owners. It gives you first hand insight in reading and interpreting canine body language. This insight allows you to have an informed, educated view into your dogs' emotion and behavior. Such insight is invaluable for day to day training, interaction and communication between you and your dog. Perfect to help those who have multiple canine households or who take their dogs to dog parks or elsewhere where there is multiple canine interaction.

It gives you the tools to know the difference between play and fighting as well as anticipate when a dangerous or potentially serious situation between dogs will occur. Will even help the reader themselves learn to avoid or foresee possible biting or attacks on humans from a strange dog.

I have been a vet tech for over 6 years and even studied wolf body language and behavior for one week ....and still there was a wealth of knowledge contained in this book even I did not know. The author, a dog trainer herself, obviously invested lots of time and study on the subject. That she would share such pearls of wisdom with others is a true example of the depth of her love & dedication to canines.

After reading this book, I put to use what I learned. It's not difficult, the concepts are simple. I am now able to calm my own dogs when they become nervous or anxious; read what they are communicating to each other as well as humans (me or others) and know when a situation is possibly or potentially explosive. I also learned that my own pets were using this language to tell me how much they loved/have deep affection and trust in me. That alone was worth the book price; To know the moment they are communicating their love and bond to me.

Buy this book if you want to deepen and enrich your love, bond and understanding of your companion. It's priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of pictures for reading dog body language   June 29, 2009
Donna Barrett (Lancaster, CA)
I am a dog trainer and it is always handy knowing how to read dogs body language. This book takes the quess work out of it! I have one class that is a group play time, pet parents are aprehensive about taking their dog to the dog park and want an alternative. Now I can help these pet parents read their dogs body language as well as the dogs their dog is playing with!

5 out of 5 stars another great Nicole Wilde book!   June 22, 2009
Debbie Dobson (New Jersey)
I have become a fan of Nicole Wilde and have several of her books on dogs and dog training. This book doesn't disappoint. Nicole gives clear observations on what your dog is feeling and how to approach the problems and help your dog overcome his/her fears and what may cause them.
She obviously loves dogs and it shows in her books. I would definitely recommend this book for any dog owner - especially if you adopted from a rescue or shelter to help understand the dog's reactions.
