Amazon.com Review Chester Raccoon doesn't want to go to school--he wants to stay home with his mother. She assures him that he'll love school--with its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better, she has a special secret that's been in the family for years--the Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as cozy as home. She takes her son's hand, spreads his tiny fingers into a fan and kisses his palm--smack dab in the middle: "Chester felt his mother's kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart." Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother's kiss. Chester is so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he--in a genuinely touching moment--gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when he is away. Audrey Penn's The Kissing Hand, published by the Child Welfare League of America, is just the right book for any child taking that fledgling plunge into preschool--or for any youngster who is temporarily separated from home or loved ones. The rough but endearing raccoon illustrations are as satisfying and soothing for anxious children as the simple story. (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson
Product Description In this contemporary classic Chester Raccoon seeks love and reassurance from his mother as he ventures out into the world to attend his very first day of school.

Magical; helpful November 5, 2009 MommyDearest (Chicago area) Such a sweet story which helped my "Mommy's Girl" 5-year-old daughter adjust to all-day Kindergarten this fall. I highly recommend it for those parents who also have little cling-ons. It will likely help them through their first days of being away at school "forever" in kid time (i.e., 7 hours in real time).
Wonderful book! October 19, 2009 Zippy Jane (Las Vegas, NV United States) This is a marvelous book for any child worried about something new happening in their life! It paints a very real "picture" of how love travels with you anywhere you go. I highly recommend it.
Love this book October 11, 2009 Chelsie N. Trowbridge (Saratoga, WY USA) This book is awesome and I really enjoyed reading it to my preschool age class.
Fantastic for kids!!! October 6, 2009 Laura E. Shaw (Dallas, TX United States) I read this to my 3 year old last nite and showed her what the "kissing hand" is and she loves it. I'll ask her "where's your kissing hand?" and she puts her hand on the side of her face; I ask her what does it say and she says "I love you, mommy."...SNIFF SNIFF. What a sweet story and it makes her smile every time.
Childhood Staple October 6, 2009 vamommy (Midlothian, VA United States) This is a must have book for anyone with young children. Not only is it perfect for dealing with the start of school, but it is excellent for any good byes. I would use it in any situation where your child will be away from you - before a trip, a weekend away, or even for split custody.
Not only did it help my daughter before preschool, but it was encouraging to me as well.
It is not deep and overly gushy. The message it perfectly appropriate for the age and written in a way young minds can understand without being overly preachy.
I plan to give this to nieces and nephews who are starting school.
