5 out of 5 stars Great for any age   March 19, 2009

I picked up my copy of this book at a charity auction to help rescue special needs dogs. I'm well past the age group this book was aimed at 56 this Sunday but ever since reading this book the last think I say to mt dogs every night after the lights are off is calling each one by name and saying I will always love you. My dogs are fast becoming seniors and we just never know when we may say goodbye.

5 out of 5 stars Oldest book I have.   January 28, 2009

This is the first book I remember reading all the way through and I fell in love with it. I believe I remember it so well because it made me cry and being 5 a book that did that was a big deal to me. I was crying though more for the love that the boy had for the dog than for the fact that the dog died. I did not have a dog at the time but the book prepared me for when I did. It showed me not to take my dog for granted, and I kept that in mind the 14 years I had her. When we had to put her to sleep last June it was one of the saddest times of my life, but thanks to the book I didn't regret anything (I even read it again a couple weeks afterward) I believe this book is more effective for a child before they have a dog. Its simple to understand the message and will give you kid a strong consideration when they are ready for a dog.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book for a grieving child!   January 14, 2009

We bought 5 books from Amazon to explain death to our small child. This book is the reason we bought 5. If my daughter read this book she would be more upset because she didn't tell him she loved him "EVERY DAY"! The way a small child will interpret these things are not the way we adults see it. I put it in the trash.

4 out of 5 stars loving and losing a pet   October 30, 2008

well written by someone who knows how quickly a puppy grows into an adult and how quickly life ends for them. Pets never live long enough but perhaps that is why they are so precious and important in our lives. Thank you, Hans Wilhelm, for sharing your story.

A book I saw when working at the library and thought, someday, I'll need this book. 11 years later I did. Now, it's on a table in my family room, in honor of my father, Nick and yellow lab, Sammy, who both passed early this year, a few months apart and who were best buds.
