5 out of 5 stars best book ever! especially for first time whelpers   September 24, 2009
Corey R. Friesen (BEND, OR)
I bought just about every whelping book their is and none was better then this. I am a very worried neurotic pet owner this book allowed me to survive my first whelping of my 2 1/2 year old Akita. it is the only whelping book you will need. easy to refer to before during and after whelping and written in a no non-sense way A+++

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!   August 24, 2009
Michael W. Riley (Knightdale, NC)
This book is very practical and informative from conception to whelping to puppies that are ready to go to their new homes! I highly recommend it! I am new to dog breeding and this provides most of the info to all your questions! It's the best book I could've gotten!

5 out of 5 stars Practical and User Friendly   June 16, 2009
Patricia Barnes (Maine, USA)
When I began breeding dogs I bought every breeding book I could find--but this one truly taught me how. I remember delivering my first breech puppy and following Ms. Lee's instructions to a T. The same can be said for tube feeding and diagnosing a "swimmer." The book was/is a life saver and a safety net. I purchase the book for dog breeders I mentor.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-have book for the beginning or expert breeder   February 22, 2009
V. Lawshe (Osteen, FL)
This is the second copy of this book that I have bought. Unfortunately, the copy I bought a few years ago is somewhere in my house - having used it religiously during each litter we've whelped. I'm sure it will turn up again!

A friend of mine had a dog who was pregnant for the first time, and since I couldn't loan her my copy, I bought her this one.
It's comparable to "What to Expect When You're Expecting", but about dogs. It covers everything from pre-breeding, through pregnancy, the whelping itself and beyond.

It answers just about any question may have about what your bitch is going through and how to help on her "special day", including some emergency procedures in case all doesn't go as planned.

This book really is a must for anyone who breeds dogs.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to just buy one book, buy this one   January 4, 2009
Saree-a (Agana Heights, GUAM)
I had gone crazy buying 7 books on amazon. Of all this was my favorite. I liked the chapter on how to prepare the mom for birthing. We had a whelping box made based on the picture in the book. We had one puppy that was a swimmer and the book told us exactly how to exercise the puppy. We also had a puppy that had a cleft lip and the book advised us to just focus our attention on the healthy puppies. This was definitely the most balanced book that cared about the health of the mom and pups. I love both of them equally. I had a tough time seeing my pups walk away from the pet store with their new owner, but I feel this book really prepared me. If you only have to buy one book, this is the one to buy. I have a yellow lab, but this book is great for all dog owners
