Product Description
Ann Martin was the first to expose the fact that euthanized cats and dogs are common ingredients in many commercial pet foods. For this second edition, the updated and revised version of the grassroots bestseller, she expanded her research to find that pet food can also contain diseased cattle, contaminated meat, moldy grain, roadkill, and rancid fats from restaurants. Also new is a chapter on how cats and dogs are used to test the nutritional claims of pet food ingredients.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money   November 20, 2009

I was very interested to read this book as a concerned pet owner. However, I was very disappointed by the contents. The book is full of opinion and conjectures, with very little fact presented. The suggestion that you should cook a whole chicken to feed your cats is simple silly to me. To me, this book is equivalent to reading radical websites with misinformation. If you have to read this book, at least save yourself the money and borrow it from the public library like I did.

5 out of 5 stars a real eye-opener   September 3, 2009

Although I had heard/read/seen snippets of the info contained in this book before, the author does such a good job of citing all her sources that I was up until almost 3AM reading this book as soon as I received it!

It's very easy to read and she uses phrases carefully not to make blanket statements that could be untrue.

She also gives some recipes in the back of the book (which is why I bought it in the first place). I have not tried them yet but they seem pretty straight forward. I wish more recipes for dogs were included.

Overall, I would say it's a $10 well spent on your pets health, if you follow the advice.

Not sure if she has a website (couldn't find one via google) but I think it would be helpful if she could add updates such as food brands recommended on her site, since it's a while before new versions of the book are published.

Ann Martin opened my eyes to the dangers of manufactured pet food. I bought this book because my cat had severe allergies and the vets suggested I change her food to an expensive vet-sold food. She got no better. This book taught me to read the labels on cat food.

My cat's allergies are still not completely gone, but she is much better eating the food I make from the recipes in this book. I am convinced it is from a lifetime of eating kitty junk food!

I recommend that all pet lovers read this helpful and well-researched book to find out what is in pet food and what health problems are caused by it. I learned to read the labels on pet food and was shocked at what I discovered. Pet food is not as regulated an industry as you assume.
