4 out of 5 stars A success thanks to other reviewers insights!   February 9, 2010

I bought this product because we were going out of town and leaving our dogs with a housesitter who would not be able to let them inside as much as they are used to. What a lifesaver it has been! Thanks to the comments of other reviewers, I decided to put a cut-to-size circle of carpet on the floor of the igloo before putting the Lectro-kennel in. The carpet is enough to hold the unit in place and gives my dogs the choice of all-warm, half-warm, soft, and hard. Like a previous reviewer, I do wish the surface was something other than hard plastic. But that might just be me - my dogs LOVE it! They never liked the dog house before and now they run in there all the time. It feels warm and toasty when I stick my hand inside. I bought the K&H fleece cover to go with it (see my review K&H Pet Products 11-1/2-Inch by 18-Inch Small Dog Bed Pad Cover Igloo Style but my dogs won't leave it in the doghouse. So they are loving the Lectro-Kennel even without a fleece cover.

4 out of 5 stars Lectro Kennel Igloo Style Heated Pad, Large   January 4, 2010

This item seems to work well in keeping my dogs warm. The only problem we had was fitting it into the Igloo with the cord coming out the back of the Igloo. We have a puppy that chews, so we had to make a hole in the dog house. It would be nice if dog houses thought ahead and put a small hole for a cord to fit through.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful heated pet bed!   December 10, 2009
Patricia Christoffersen (Cedar City, Utah)
My dogs only live outside during the day and they are pretty much couch potatoes in the house the rest of the time. However, once in a blue moon, my husband and I go away for 1 night and the dogs get to "camp out". Since we live in Utah, and it does get cold here, I bought heated pads to put in their dog houses. They weren't quite sure how to deal with them and I had to take the fleece cover off because Bosco thought it was something to play with! Since the weather has dipped into negative numbers, the dogs have been delighted to have the warmers in their dog houses. They may seem pricey, but for my peace of mind (and for the dogs' overall warmth!) it was money well spent!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.   November 17, 2009

This "heated pad" is not actually a pad at all. It is made entirely of hard plastic with no padding whatsoever. I see that it is "contructed of rugged ABS plastic" but mistakenly thought "pad" meant it would have at least some sort of softness to it. This plastic contruction makes it slide around in the dogloo, which is easily solved with a piece of scrap carpet placed underneath. However it doesnt solve the problem of no padding at all. It emits a pleasing heat when laid on, but my dog would rather lay on a soft cold dog bed than a heated piece of hard plastic, even with a thin covering on it. There is not enough heat to transfer through a comfortable pad placed on top of it. I am returning this and getting the "soft outdoor bed" of the same brand instead.

3 out of 5 stars Design inadequate for intended purpose   August 10, 2009

This heated pad is intended to be installed into one of the manufacturer's dog houses (large Dogloo in my case), but it requires some modifications for a proper installation. As is, the heated pad too easily slips/slides around the dog house floor, making it difficult for the dog to use, and in my case, scaring my dog to the point that she would not go back into her dog house. (It took a couple of days and much effort to get my dog to re-enter the house after I fixed the problem with the pad.)
My solution to stop the pad movement was to install a 35-1/2 inch cross brace (simple wooden, yard-stick ruler with 1/2-inch cut off) screwed to the dog house floor to lock the pad in place. Something like this should have been included with the pad by the manufacturer. Or alternatively, the pad should have been designed with two or three anchor holes pre-drilled in the pad with instructions for the buyer to attach the pad to the dog house floor with screws.
If this pad is ever redesigned, I would also recommend that the bottom have a dimpled or ridged surface rather than the present smooth surface to allow water (or dog urine) a way to escape/drain away. Also, the dog's comfort could be improved by the pad having a softer (and thicker) top surface material such as rubber rather than the stiff plastic now used.
