One shelf library October 20, 2009 Just Falcon (Dancing Bear Farm, "up mountain" West Virginia) (Just moved to 30 acres in West-by-God Virginia - we live "up mountain") Homesteading has become popular in the last few years so there's lots of info and groups on line. For the basics and emergencies it's nice to have one book shelf of quick reference. I have probably saved about $200 and several feet of space by buying this one book.
Most of the specie specific (say that three times fast) books I found were merely the same information, edited with more spaces and pages, stuffed with photos of various breeds and babies. This book assumes you have already made your breed choice and doesn't give club or association listings. Current info for breeds and clubs can be found online. This is a guide on things you MUST know to keep yourself and your animals safe and healthy. Look up gestation times, temperatures and the meaning of commonly used terms in seconds.
In three months I have rebuilt an old chicken coop and raised "peeps". Trimming goat feet is now a routine task and I know what to do to prevent "wet dewlap" in my rabbits. I have saved time and money by purchasing those items I need vs want before my new animals arrive and having an appropriate first aid kit on hand from the start.
If you have limited funds and space, this is probably one of the two books you should start with. Be sure you get the most recent editions. The other one is The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It by John Seymour. If you are considering becoming a 'Ruralpoliton' or Homesteading you'll find it both educational and entertaining. And, as a wonderful set of biology and country life text books, no home school should be without them.
Be well, Think often sf
Very Helpful April 19, 2009 Francis Davis (North Miami Beach Fl) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As the name suggests, it is an excellent book for animal owners, and can save a lot of money on Vet fees, and make the owner more knowledgeable in observational animal health.
A Must Have For Serious Pet Owners November 24, 2008 R. Oehlke (Wisconsin) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great book to have on hand if you own an animal. It covers farm animals as well as pets. This book has helped me care for the dogs I have owned and helped my friends out as well. Definitely a must have for animal owners.

A good reference my wife and I have already found useful in dealing with our outside farm animals.
Must have! January 4, 2007 Beth (Arkansas) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a must have for anyone who wants to have farm animals and doesn't know anything about animals. It is in depth and informative with instructions on how to enclose, feed and care for your farm animals. It is truthful about when you need a vet and when you don't, if you want to save money, time and energy read this book before you buy your land, animals and equipment!
